What are the symptoms of calf phlebitis

The main cause of calf phlebitis is that the patient stands for a long time or works for a long time. The symptoms of calf phlebitis are very obvious. First, the calf will have obvious swelling and pain. In more serious cases, the patient will be unable to walk, and the skin will turn dark red.

1. Patients with deep vein thrombosis in the calf complain of swollen and painful calves and inability to walk. Examination of the calf was positive for pain and tenderness and mild calf swelling with a positive Homans sign. Deep vein thrombosis in the lower leg is also called peripheral deep vein thrombosis. Thrombosis originating from the calf muscle venous plexus is a common site for deep vein thrombosis after surgery. Due to its small range, it often does not affect blood return, the degree of inflammatory response stimulated is mild, and the clinical manifestations are not obvious. According to Kakkar's report, about 30% can be automatically dissolved within 72 hours, 45% continue to transform into organization, and 25% spread from the proximal segment to involve the main vein, and there is also a risk of complications of pulmonary embolism.

2. Patients with superficial calf phlebitis have local redness, swelling and pain in the affected limb, which worsens when walking. Painful cord-like hard strips or beaded nodules can be felt. Patients with deep phlebitis have a sudden onset of disease, with pitting swelling in the affected limb, dark red skin, extensive venous dilatation or varicose veins, and capillary dilation; in the later stage, nutritional changes appear, accompanied by stasis dermatitis, pigmentation or superficial ulcers, and the circumference of the thigh and tibia is more than 1 cm thicker than that of the healthy limb. The swelling and pain worsen when walking and are relieved after lying still. Venography can show stenosis or blockage of the deep veins in the affected limb.

3. If effective control measures are not taken in time, as the disease continues to worsen, nutritional changes will appear in the later stage, accompanied by congestive dermatitis, pigmentation or superficial ulcers. The circumference of the thigh and tibia will be more than 1 cm thicker than that of the healthy limb. The swelling and pain will worsen when walking and will be relieved after lying still. Venography can show stenosis or blockage of the deep veins of the affected limb. These are all symptoms of calf phlebitis.
