What's the matter with normal glycosylated hemoglobin and high fasting blood sugar?

Many diabetic patients will see changes in their daily blood sugar levels. In fact, these values reflect the blood sugar levels at the time of measurement, and many factors can affect whether the blood sugar levels are too high or too low. Sometimes, when we measure blood sugar, we often find that the glycosylated hemoglobin is normal, but the fasting blood sugar is high. What is going on?

Normal glycosylated hemoglobin High fasting blood sugar

1. The blood sugar test conducted by diabetic patients every day only reflects the blood sugar changes at the time of the test, while the measurement of glycosylated hemoglobin can show the patient's overall blood sugar control situation in the past 2-3 months. Experts recommend that if the blood sugar control of diabetic patients has reached the standard and the blood sugar control status is relatively stable, they should undergo glycosylated hemoglobin testing at least twice a year; for those diabetic patients who need to change their treatment plan or whose blood sugar control status is unstable, glycosylated hemoglobin should be measured every three months.

2. When the glucose concentration in the blood is high, the content of glycosylated hemoglobin formed by the human body is also relatively high. Generally speaking, the life span of human red blood cells is 120 days (3 months). Before the death of human red blood cells, the content of glycosylated hemoglobin in the blood will remain relatively unchanged. Therefore, it can be seen that the content of glycosylated hemoglobin in the blood changes once every 120 days.

3. Therefore, the glycated hemoglobin content reflects the average blood sugar level over the past 2-3 months. Glycated hemoglobin test results are expressed as a percentage. The HbA1c level of non-diabetic people is 4-5.5%. Many studies have found that if diabetic patients can reduce their HbA1c level to below 8.1%, the incidence of diabetic complications will be greatly reduced.

4. How do HbA1c test results help patients manage their diabetes? For example, if you only measure your blood sugar level before breakfast every day, that is, your fasting blood sugar level, and find that the value is 130mg/dl, which is within the normal safety range. However, when you measure your glycosylated hemoglobin, it is found to be 11%, which means that in the past 2-3 months, your average blood sugar level has been close to 270mg/dl, which suggests that you are at a very high risk of developing diabetes complications in the future.

5. The results of the glycosylated hemoglobin test indicate that although the blood sugar results before breakfast are satisfactory, the blood sugar levels at other times of the day are seriously exceeded. Therefore, you need to re-evaluate your diet, exercise and medication and make corresponding adjustments. In addition, you need to measure your blood sugar levels more frequently than now.
