Learn more about the side effects of glucocorticoids

Glucocorticoids have many effects, but they also have many side effects. It will suppress the immune function and has no antibacterial effect; large-scale use of glucocorticoids will cause metabolic disorders; it may induce hypertension and atherosclerosis; reduce the resistance of gastric mucosa, induce symptoms such as intestinal perforation; cause osteoporosis, etc. Next, I will introduce the side effects after stopping the medication, which are also very scary.

1. Recurrence of primary disease

2. Adrenal cortex atrophy or dysfunction: Long-term use of hormones can cause negative feedback due to the long-term higher-than-normal levels of glucocorticoids in the body, which can affect the secretion of adrenocorticotropic hormone by the hypothalamus and anterior pituitary gland, reduce the secretion of endogenous glucocorticoids or lead to adrenal cortex dysfunction. Once encountering stress, such as bleeding or infection, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, low blood pressure, low blood sugar or hypoglycemia coma may occur.

3. Other systemic symptoms such as fatigue, joint pain, and myalgia. Issues with the use of hormones in special populations: Children, the elderly, especially those with diabetes, hypertension, osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, pregnant and lactating women, people with active tuberculosis or other infectious diseases, mental patients, and epileptic patients. The use of hormones should be determined based on the specific circumstances of the patients. The use of hormones in these patients is not contraindicated.

Warm reminder: Hormones do not cure diseases, but are drugs that stimulate the body's best disease-fighting ability. They can cover up the disease and replace the virus. Large amounts of hormone use can lead to even lower immunity. In addition, the patient's own neurological dysfunction will relapse when encountering viruses or inflammation, causing serious damage to the spinal cord. If the disease is not treated or delayed, it will lead to multiple sclerosis. Repeated relapses of the virus will invade the brain and endanger life. Early treatment is mostly based on hormone and nutritional therapy, but the effect is difficult to control. Because the disease causes demyelination and severe neurological damage, secondary axonal damage will occur, leading to relapses and further aggravation of neurological symptoms.
