What should I do if my sigmoid colon is too long?

Many people do not know how to treat prolonged sigmoid colon disease. In fact, the most common treatments now include surgical treatment and non-surgical treatment. The necessity of surgical treatment is that the patient has stubborn constipation that is not responding to non-surgical treatment and must undergo surgery.

1. Surgery is the main method for treating redundant sigmoid colon and is suitable for all children with redundant sigmoid colon. Non-surgical treatment is a combination of bowel training, diet, and medication, and repeated treatments are required.

2. Bowel training and diet therapy are of great significance in preventing bowel dysfunction, and are also applicable to children who already have bowel dysfunction. Oral administration of liquid paraffin helps to clear out feces accumulated in the sigmoid colon and promote the recovery of sigmoid colon function. However, it takes at least 1 to 2 months to restore sigmoid colon function, so other methods can be used as auxiliary treatment:

3. Take neostigmine orally or by injection (under hospitalization conditions); take B vitamins; and electrically stimulate the lower abdomen (sigmoid colon) once a day for 10 to 15 minutes each time. The earlier and more persistently non-surgical treatment is started, the better the effect. Cure criteria: clinical symptoms disappear within 2 to 4 years after treatment.

4. Indications for surgery: Intractable constipation that is not responsive to non-surgical treatment; progressive dilatation of the sigmoid colon or decreased motility shown on electromyography during non-surgical treatment; abdominal pain attacks that are not relieved during non-surgical treatment, and other causes are excluded.
