Do you know the effects and functions of gentian?

Gentiana has many effects and functions, the most common ones are the following four. It can promote digestion, increase appetite, protect the liver and promote bile secretion, and has a very obvious diuretic and anti-bacterial effect. If these diseases occur, you can try Chinese medicine treatment.

1. Effects on the digestive tract

Gentian or gentiopicroside can promote the secretion of gastric juice and gastric acid. Oral administration of gentiopicroside to dogs with gastric fistula can promote the secretion of gastric juice, increase free hydrochloric acid, and improve appetite. However, sublingual application or intravenous injection is ineffective, so it is believed that gentiopicroside can directly promote gastric juice secretion and increase free acid.

2. Choleretic and liver-protective effects

In healthy mice and those with liver damage, 50g/kg gentian injection was given into the duodenum or 4.5g/kg was given intravenously into healthy dogs, both of which significantly increased bile flow. From the bile secretion flow curve of dogs, it can be seen that two peaks appear at 5 minutes and 20 minutes after administration. Gentianopicrin has a protective effect on the acute liver injury model of mice caused by carbon tetrachloride and D-galactosamine (Galn), can reduce the degree of liver necrosis and hepatocellular pathology in the animals in the drug-treated group, and counteract the hepatocyte glycogen synthesis disorder caused by carbon tetrachloride.

Subcutaneous injection of gentian injection 25g/kg can effectively treat the experimental jaundice model of mice caused by α-naphthyl isothiocyanate, that is, cholestasis and hyperbilirubinemia, and can effectively reduce serum bilirubin levels.

3. Diuretic effect

Injection of gentian 10g/kg into ear vein increased the average urine output of 5 rabbits from 0.76ml per 30 minutes before administration to 2.64ml (p<0.1), indicating that gentian has a significant diuretic effect.

4. Antibacterial Effect

14 species of Gentiana were tried, 7 of which were effective against root nodule bacteria, Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, and Agrobacterium tumefaciens. The water extract of gentian has different degrees of inhibitory effect on skin fungi such as Trichophyton gypseum and Nocardia asteroides in test tubes. The test tube method has proved that gentian decoction has different degrees of inhibitory effect on Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus, Salmonella typhi, Shigella dysenteriae, Staphylococcus aureus, etc.
