Sequelae of eye bag excision, these failure manifestations should be taken seriously

Blepharoplasty is a very common method to remove eye bags, but this method also has its disadvantages and is prone to failure, such as ectropion and sunken lower eyelids. Therefore, you must take good care of yourself and protect the wound after the operation.

1. Failure of eye bag excision

1. Lower eyelid ectropion

It is another common complication after eye bag surgery.

The symptoms include outward turning, congestion, edema of the lower eyelid conjunctiva, and eye irritation symptoms such as photophobia and tearing. If the condition lasts for a long time, the conjunctiva will become thicker.

The most common cause is excessive removal of lower eyelid skin and muscle. Persistent ectropion requires surgical correction. Mild cases can be corrected with lateral canthal ligament tightening or lateral retinaculum suspension technique. More severe cases can be corrected with orbicularis oculi muscle suspension or arcus oculi release. Very severe cases often require skin transplantation, including skin grafts and flaps.

2. Lower eyelid depression

The main reason is excessive orbital fat removal. In addition, the scar fusion of the orbital septum and the lower eyelid retractor muscle causes the orbital fat to shift downward and backward, which may also contribute to the formation of lower eyelid concavity.

For mild cases, satisfactory correction can often be achieved using the arch edge release technique and superficial cheek lift technique. For severe cases, autologous fat injection or fat fascia flap transplantation is often required for correction.

3. Lower eyelid retraction

Lower eyelid retraction refers to downward displacement of the lower eyelid margin without ectropion and is common after conventional transcutaneous blepharoplasty.

This complication was often ignored in the past, but has gradually attracted attention in recent years. Clinically, the lateral canthus angle becomes blunt, the cornea is over-exposed, the entire eye appears round and sad, and there are eye irritation symptoms such as photophobia and tearing. Lower eyelid retraction can result from either horizontal laxity or vertical tissue shortage.

2. Postoperative precautions

1. Protect the wound and avoid any injury or eye fatigue, so pay attention to rest, watch less TV, computer, and books, avoid strenuous exercise, do not touch the wound, and keep the wound clean and dry. In addition, when lying down, you should adjust the height of the pillow to prevent it from being too low and aggravating the swelling of the wound.

2. There may be slight swelling after surgery to remove eye bags, which can be alleviated by some external treatments, such as local cold compresses 2 days after surgery and hot compresses after the 3rd day. This will help reduce the degree of congestion and edema and promote recovery.

3. Ensure a healthy diet and lifestyle, eat more protein-rich foods, fruits and vegetables, and ensure a quiet and comfortable recovery environment. However, avoid excessive eye fatigue and avoid eating irritating foods such as peppers, seafood, etc. within a week. You are also not allowed to smoke or drink.

4. Within 2-3 days after the operation, there will be discomfort in the eyes and slight local pain. During this stage, you should pay attention to rest and try to avoid reading books, newspapers, magazines and watching TV. This will help reduce swelling and heal the wound.

5. After the operation, it is advisable to take oral anti-inflammatory drugs for about 3 days and avoid moisture and touch on the wound to prevent infection. You can also use ice packs to cool the surgical area to reduce bleeding, prevent swelling, and promote wound healing.

6. If the surgical results are not satisfactory, you should remain calm and seek medical attention in a timely manner so that the surgery can be repaired again.
