Is a swollen clavicle a symptom of an osteoma?

On both sides of our neck are the clavicles. There is a vortex at the connection of the clavicles. This place can be clearly seen when we move our necks. It is usually concave and can be felt by hand. But some people will have symptoms such as swollen clavicle. At this time, everyone should be careful. It may be related to the early symptoms of osteoma. You need to pay more attention to it in normal times. Generally, when clavicle osteoma occurs, the disease must be diagnosed as soon as possible. The best way to confirm the diagnosis is to understand the early symptoms of swollen clavicle.

1. Osteomas grow slowly, and small ones are usually asymptomatic. It is often discovered accidentally during sinus or skull X-ray examination. Larger bone tumors will cause corresponding symptoms depending on the location and extent of invasion. Patients often present with localized deformities and are asymptomatic. The main cause of symptoms is that the tumor compresses adjacent tissues or interferes with function. For example, skull osteoma can sometimes cause headaches, nasal breathing difficulties or exophthalmos. Typical Gardner syndrome usually develops symptoms in adulthood. Bone tumors and soft tissue tumors often precede intestinal polyps. Intestinal polyps often become malignant after 10 to 15 years. The main early symptoms are diarrhea, bloody stools, mucus in the stools, and anemia.

2. The osteoma is hard, covered with periosteum, and its base is connected to the bone tissue. It may have a broad base or pedicle. The cross section shows bone tissue. Depending on the bone density, it is divided into ivory bone type (i.e. compact bone type) and spongy bone type (i.e. cancellous bone type), the former being more common. Under the microscope, a large amount of new bone can be seen with disordered arrangement and uneven calcification, the surface of which is covered with osteoblasts and the space between them is fibrous tissue. It may contain bone plates and a small number of Hassan tubules, and cancellous bone type may have bone marrow tissue.

3. When the frontal sinus osteoma is large, it may cause forehead pain, paresthesia, and forehead bulge, but the surface skin is normal. If it grows towards the nasal cavity or eye socket, it will destroy the bones and cause symptoms such as nasal congestion, nasal infection, forward, outward and downward movement of the eyeball, or exophthalmos and diplopia. If it develops backward, it will invade the skull and cause symptoms of intracranial compression, such as headache, nausea, vomiting, etc.

4. Larger ethmoid sinus osteomas may occupy most of the air cells, bulge the medial canthus and forehead, and extend into the frontal sinus and sphenoid sinus. If the disease develops into the nasal cavity, eye sockets or intracranial area, corresponding symptoms will appear.
