What should be the normal value of electrolytes for humans?

Electrolyte balance is very important for the human body. Once an electrolyte imbalance occurs, it will induce various disease manifestations. The so-called electrolyte balance can also be called acid-base balance. Only by maintaining this dynamic balance can the body maintain health. Therefore, when a certain disease occurs, electrolyte disorders often occur. Diagnosis in the hospital is required to determine the cause.

1. Normal values of human electrolytes:

1. Sodium (Na) Normal value

135~145mmol/L.

2. Potassium (K) Normal value

Newborns: 3.7-5.9mmol/L; infants: 4.1-5.3mmol/L; children: 3.4-4.7mmol/L; adults: 4.1-5.6mmol/L.

3. Calcium (Ca) Normal value

Infants: 2.5~3.0mmol/L; Adults: 2.1~2.55mmol/L.

2. Clinical significance of electrolyte testing:

Abnormal results

1. Sodium

High values (above 150 mEq/l): Extreme dehydration caused by diabetic lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, sweating, diabetes insipidus, Cushing's disease, aldosteronism, excessive salt intake, etc.

Low values (below 130mEq/l): acute renal failure, chronic renal failure, nephrotic syndrome, hypothyroidism, heart failure, burns, abnormal secretion of antidiuretic hormone.

2. Potassium

High values (above 5.5 mEq/l): acute renal failure, chronic renal failure, massive blood transfusion, taking potassium-storing diuretics.

Low values (below 3.5 mEq/l): aldostenmism, Cushing's disease, respiratory distress syndrome, taking diuretics, and anorexia nervosa.

3. Calcium

High values (above 12mEq/l): malignant tumors, multiple myeloma, primary hyperparathyroidism.

Low values (below 8mEq/1): renal failure, hypoparathyroidism, vitamin D deficiency.

4. Chlorine

High values (above 110mEq/l): dehydration, renal failure, hyperventilation syndrome.

Low values (below 97mEq/1): emphysema, pneumonia, renal failure, vomiting, diarrhea.
