What is the cause of calcium oxalate stones

Calcium oxalate stones are a relatively common type of kidney stones, accounting for more than 80% of kidney stones. This type of stone is formed in acidic or neutral urine and mostly occurs in men. Poor diet and bad living habits are closely related to it. For example, excessive protein intake and excessive sugar intake can easily induce calcium oxalate stones. In addition, drinking is also an important cause of stones.

Reason 1

Among them, excessive accumulation of oxalic acid is the biggest reason. The large accumulation of oxalic acid in the body is one of the factors that lead to kidney stones. Foods that people generally like to eat, such as spinach, beans, grapes, cocoa, tea, oranges, tomatoes, potatoes, plums, bamboo shoots, etc., are foods with high oxalic acid content. Doctors have discovered through research that 200 grams of spinach contain 725.6 mg of oxalic acid. If a person eats 200 grams of spinach at one time, 8 hours after the meal, the amount of oxalic acid excreted in the urine will be 20-25 mg, which is equivalent to the average total amount of oxalic acid excreted by a normal person in 24 hours.

Reason 2

The second reason is the increase in sugar content. Sugar is an important nutrient for the human body and should be supplemented in appropriate amounts regularly. However, adding too much at once, especially lactose, can create conditions for the formation of stones. Experts have found that whether normal people or stone patients, after consuming 100 grams of sucrose, if their urine is checked 2 hours later, it is found that the concentrations of calcium and oxalic acid in the urine have increased. If lactose is taken, it can promote the absorption of calcium and is more likely to cause the accumulation of calcium oxalate in the body and form urinary stones.

Reason 3

The third reason is excess protein. Chemical analysis of the composition of kidney stones revealed that calcium oxalate accounted for 87.5% of the stones. The source of such a large proportion of calcium oxalate is that in addition to containing the raw materials of oxalic acid - glycine and hydroxyproline, protein can also promote the absorption of calcium by intestinal function. If you often consume excessive amounts of high-protein foods, the calcium, oxalic acid, and uric acid content in your kidneys and urine will generally increase. If the excess calcium, oxalic acid and uric acid cannot be excreted from the body through the kidney function in a timely and effective manner, the conditions for kidney stones and ureteral stones will be created. This is the main reason for the increasing incidence of kidney stones in economically developed countries in the world today.
