Should I use cold or hot compress for bloodshot eyes?

Eye congestion is a very common condition, which can make patients feel very uncomfortable, so correct care methods are very important. Hot and cold compresses need to be applied according to different situations. Some situations require a combination of the two, so people should have a full understanding of this and do preventive work in advance.

1. Hot compress

Eye congestion is caused by an increase in the amount of blood flowing into the blood vessels in the white part of the eye, which causes the blood vessels to dilate and makes the white part of the eye appear red. At this time, applying hot compress can facilitate blood circulation. You may feel that the congestion has worsened temporarily, but it will eventually cure the congestion symptoms.

Method: Steam a soft towel or soak it in hot water and drain it, then apply it to the eyes until the towel becomes cool. This can promote blood absorption in the eyes and relieve symptoms of eye congestion.

2. Cold compress

Eye congestion is commonly caused by local eye inflammation. The principle of thermal expansion and contraction at low temperatures can be used to shrink the blood vessels around the eyes, reduce inflammation, and achieve the effect of reducing swelling and pain, inhibiting symptoms of eye congestion, and directly providing water vapor to moisturize the eyes.

Method: Use a cold towel or wrap ice cubes in a towel and apply it to the eyes for 10-15 minutes. This can constrict the blood vessels around the eyes and eliminate congestion in the eyes.

3. Combination of cold and hot compresses

Apply cold compress treatment two days before the eye congestion. First, apply a cold towel slowly on the eye. This can shrink the dilated blood vessels in the eye and inhibit the symptoms of eye congestion. On the third day, use hot compresses to help disperse excess blood stasis in the eyes.

Other treatments for bloodshot eyes:

1. If the eyes are invaded by bacteria, choose eye drops containing anti-inflammatory and bactericidal drugs, three to four times a day. If it is not due to infection, do not use medication indiscriminately and just rest.

2. You can try using corticosteroid eye drops, but be careful to observe. If you find any abnormalities, stop using immediately and seek medical attention immediately.

3. Find out the cause before starting treatment.

4. Drinking Chinese medicine alone is bitter and inconvenient in the long run. You can brew some chrysanthemum and wolfberry tea yourself in your daily life.
