Is bone marrow edema serious?

Bone marrow edema is a common disease syndrome in clinical practice. Many diseases may cause symptoms of bone marrow edema. The initial symptoms may not be obvious, so it is easy to be ignored and treated. Patients must pay attention to the problem of bone marrow edema. The symptoms and treatment of the disease should be based on its severity. So is bone marrow edema serious?

1. Bone marrow edema is more severe

Bone marrow edema is a sign with bone matrix edema, fibrous tissue proliferation and inflammatory cell infiltration as the main pathological manifestations. It is relatively serious and requires attention to treatment. With the development of science and technology and the widespread application of MRI, the signs of bone marrow edema have gradually been recognized, but they have not attracted widespread attention until recent years when scholars conducted related research reports. The causes of bone marrow edema are still unclear, including trauma, hormones, mechanical stress changes, etc. Biomechanical changes are one of the causes of bone marrow edema, and mechanical stress may play an important role in the development of bone marrow edema. Changes in mechanical stress lead to fractures of trabeculae in the weight-bearing area and bone marrow edema. MRI is currently the best means to diagnose and evaluate bone marrow edema.

2. Pain symptoms

The degree of pain is consistent with the severity of bone marrow edema. As the severity of bone marrow edema on MRI decreases, the patient's pain level also decreases accordingly. Specifically in this case, it should be a problem with the patella, caused by repeated excessive knee flexion activities that increase the stress on the patella. This type of case is relatively rare and easy to misdiagnose. Bone marrow edema syndrome usually occurs in the hip joint.

3. Treatment

The first and most important thing in treatment is to limit knee flexion (especially deep knee flexion), kicking and jumping movements, otherwise the effect of treatment will be greatly reduced. Oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as celecoxib, ibuprofen, etc. Physical therapy such as massage, ultrashort wave, etc., and external application of Chinese medicine have good effects. Generally, surgery is not required. After the pain is relieved, you cannot resume training and exercise immediately. You need to gradually resume exercise after a period of time, but you must be careful to avoid exercise that aggravates patellar injury.
