Calf soreness and heavy legs

Calf soreness and heavy legs

Some elderly people suffer from the three highs and sometimes often complain that their calves feel sore and swollen all year round, and their legs feel heavy when they walk, and they always feel difficult to lift them. This symptom becomes more obvious especially when you walk a lot. Sometimes a break can make things better. I went to the hospital for a check-up and the doctor prescribed some blood-activating and blood-stasis-removing medicine, but it didn't seem to work. So what are the common causes of sore calves and heavy legs?

1. Causes

1. Traditional Chinese medicine believes that it is caused by kidney deficiency, accompanied by qi stagnation and blood stasis. The main symptoms are weak kidney qi, heavy legs, sourness caused by insufficient kidney essence, swelling caused by poor blood circulation, and blood stasis caused by poor blood circulation.

2. It may be caused by catching a cold at night or calcium deficiency, or it may be a manifestation of restless leg syndrome.

3. Soreness and swelling are often caused by the metabolic products of leg muscle lack of oxygen. You can check whether the blood flow in the legs is flowing smoothly while you sleep, whether they are compressed, or whether there are any cramps. In addition, gout can also cause a feeling of soreness and swelling.

4. Rheumatic diseases, lumbar spondylosis, kidney and liver diseases may also cause symptoms of sore calf muscles and heavy legs.

5. Varicose veins in the lower limbs and venous thrombosis in the lower limbs can also cause this kind of discomfort in the legs.

6. This symptom may also occur when you frequently do heavy work and overexert yourself, causing muscle strain.

7. Heaviness in the legs is a symptom of many diseases, such as lumbar spine disease, lumbar muscle strain, heart failure, lower limb vascular and muscle disease, and nervous system disease.

8. High blood pressure, high blood lipids, anemia, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, etc. can also cause it.

2. Inspection

Waist examination, X-ray examination, color ultrasound or CT examination, and MRI if necessary.

2. How to treat

1. Raise your legs, walk less, and most importantly, don't let your feet hang down for too long. For patients with lumbar disc herniation, appropriate treatment methods should be selected according to the situation (such as massage, acupuncture, Chinese medicine, etc.).

2. Pay attention to rest, increase dietary nutrition appropriately, pay attention to balanced nutrition, do not eat spicy, greasy and irritating foods, eat more fruits and vegetables, relax and avoid overwork. Taking hot baths regularly can improve blood circulation in the legs and help relieve calf pain.

3. Go to the hospital for examination to rule out organic diseases that cause soreness, swelling, and heaviness in the lower limbs.

4. If the disease is caused by calcium deficiency, you should pay attention to supplementing calcium and vitamin D. You can take calcium tablets or eat calcium-rich foods such as dried shrimps, milk, and soy products.

5. If the condition is caused by excessive fatigue or cold legs, you need to pay attention to rest, avoid fatigue, keep warm, avoid cold, and apply massage and hot compress.

Tips

Due to the continuous increase in arterial pressure, hypertensive patients often develop systemic arteriosclerosis in the later stages, which affects the blood supply to tissues and muscles. In addition, the patients' blood lipids and blood sugar are also high, which are important factors that aggravate vascular sclerosis. Arteriosclerosis is a non-inflammatory disease of the arteries. The arterial walls gradually thicken and harden, lose elasticity, and the lumen narrows. It develops from initial hardening of small arteries to hardening of the middle layer of the arteries, and finally forms atherosclerosis. Lower limb arteriosclerosis is generally manifested as a feeling of heaviness in the lower limbs when walking.
