What should I do if I feel something is rubbing my eyes?

If you always feel something rubbing your eyes, this is often the cause of dry eyes, that is, your eyes will be dry. When this happens, you should go to the hospital for a check-up in time to see if it is the cause of dry eyes, and then receive regular treatment. You should blink more often, which is a neuroprotective measure that helps the tear glands secrete appropriate fluid, which can help prevent dry eyes.

1. Blink more

Blinking is a protective nerve reflex action, and the tear layer can evenly apply tears to the surface of the cornea and conjunctiva to keep them moistened and not dry. Once the number of blinks decreases, the amount of tears will directly decrease, and the tear film exposed to the air will evaporate quickly and lose its protective power for the eyeball.

When using your eyes for long periods of time, such as operating a computer, driving, reading, etc., remind yourself not to focus too much and take some time to blink. Most people blink once every five seconds, or about 20 times per minute.

2. Pay attention to eye hygiene

Pay attention to eye hygiene, wash your hands frequently, do not rub your eyes with your hands, take a break after using your eyes for about an hour, close your eyes and look into the distance. For patients with oily secretions, debris, and falling material on the eyelids, it is important to maintain eyelid hygiene.

3. Attention if you use the computer for a long time

People who work with computers for a long time, especially young people, should pay attention to timely treatment of dry eye symptoms, reduce computer use time, and avoid continuous long-term computer use.

Working posture and distance are also very important. Try to keep a distance of more than 60 cm and adjust the most appropriate posture so that your eyes can be kept downward at about 30 degrees. Such an angle can relax the neck muscles and minimize the area of the eye surface exposed to the air.

4. Don’t abuse eye drops

When there is a problem with the eyes, many people will use eye drops first. Be careful not to abuse eye drops at this time. In order to preserve their quality, eye drops also contain certain preservatives. Long-term abuse will reduce the resistance of the eyes, resulting in insufficient tear secretion, which can easily lead to dry eyes. The chance of eye infection is also greatly increased. Therefore, patients with dry eyes must choose eye drops under the guidance of a doctor.

5. Wearing glasses

Contact lenses can indeed improve a person's appearance to a great extent, but they also bring a lot of pain, dry eyes being one of them. Wearing contact lenses for a long time will reduce tear secretion, so people who wear contact lenses always feel dry eyes.

To prevent dry eyes, it is recommended to wear glasses on windy days, wear goggles when swimming, and wear sunglasses when going out.

6. Use air conditioning as little as possible and spend less time in rooms with low humidity

In addition to regulating temperature, air conditioners also dehumidify, reducing the moisture content in the air. In this dry environment, the evaporation rate of the tear film increases, which can easily cause the eyes to become dry and astringent. Winter, with its dry climate, is a high incidence season for dry eyes.

When the weather is hot, when using air conditioning, be sure to open windows for ventilation regularly, or place an air humidifier in the room. Keep the room humidity between 30%--50%.
