How to massage a newborn baby with blocked nasolacrimal duct

Nasolacrimal duct obstruction is a common clinical disease. Many newborns may also encounter the problem of nasolacrimal duct obstruction, which has a great impact on the child's body. The clinical treatment of tear duct obstruction should also be determined based on the condition of the disease. In addition to conventional treatments, conditioning in daily life is also necessary, such as massage. So how should we massage a newborn baby when his nasolacrimal duct is blocked?

1. Tears only without secretions

If the baby only has tears in the corners of the eyes, and there is no purulent or sticky secretion, you only need to use your fingertips to press down on the lacrimal sac area at the root of the nose and the lowest point of the inner canthus to transfer the pressure to the lower part of the nasolacrimal duct. Before massaging your baby, cut your nails into round shapes, wash your hands with antibacterial soap, and then start massaging your baby.

2. There is secretion

If the baby's eye secretions are sticky or purulent, use your fingertips to squeeze upwards in the lacrimal sac area when massaging, try to squeeze out the secretions stored in the lacrimal sac, wipe the secretions with a cotton ball, and then massage downwards. Massage 3 to 4 times a day. The massage should have a certain force. You should feel the pressure on the nasal bone and have a certain sense of pressure to achieve the massage effect. But don't use too much force to avoid hurting the baby's delicate skin and subcutaneous blood vessels. It is best to use antibiotic eye drops before each massage, and the effect will be better.

3. Note

When parents do "tear sac area massage" at home, it is best done by two people. Before performing the tear sac area massage, parents should first trim their nails and wash their hands. One person fixes the baby's head and upper limbs, and the other person holds the baby's head with his left hand. Press the thumb or index finger of the right hand on the inner corner of the eye near the lowest point of the nose bridge and press down (towards the nostril) with even force. Use the index finger to massage from the inner canthus to the wing of the nose along the direction of the nasolacrimal duct from top to bottom.
