How to control the causes of eutrophication of water bodies

Today's environmental pollution has become a major problem faced by all countries. Severe environmental pollution directly leads to ecological changes and poses a great threat to the human body. Water pollution, in particular, has become increasingly prominent in recent years. Water quality in various regions does not meet standards, and eutrophication of water bodies is even more obvious. Drinking this water can easily cause cancer. So, what are the causes of eutrophication of water bodies and how to control it?

Eutrophication of water bodies will not only affect the overall beauty of the urban environment, but will also cause serious pollution to the water bodies and affect the normal growth and reproduction of aquatic organisms. So today we will talk about how to deal with the phenomenon of eutrophication of water bodies——

How to deal with water eutrophication ?

Methods/Steps

1. First of all, we need to understand what causes eutrophication of water bodies. Eutrophication of water bodies is the phenomenon that certain aquatic plants grow wildly due to the large accumulation of nitrogen and phosphorus in various industrial wastewater, domestic sewage and agricultural water discharged by humans. These plants absorb a large amount of oxygen in the water and prevent oxygen in the air from entering the water body, causing the original aquatic organisms to decrease in number or die due to lack of oxygen.

2. Wastewater can only be discharged into the water after being treated to meet the standards. The country has a set of strict standards for sewage discharge, so the sewage that causes eutrophication after being discharged into the water body is most likely untreated sewage that does not meet the standards. Restricting the conditions for the discharge of wastewater into natural water bodies and increasing management efforts in this regard will reduce the possibility of eutrophication of water bodies to a certain extent.

3. Directly remove nitrogen and phosphorus from water. Adding chemicals to remove nitrogen and phosphorus can solve the problem of eutrophication at the source. However, chemical drugs are harmful to a certain extent. Once they are added in excess or an accident occurs, they may have a negative impact on the human body or water.

4. Remove plants that are enriched in water. Too many plants will greatly reduce the amount of oxygen and cause the death of aquatic organisms. Therefore, removing these over-reproducing plants and increasing the oxygen content in the water can alleviate the eutrophication of water bodies to a certain extent.

Aquatic plants can be removed by chemical or physical methods. The chemical method refers to the addition of drugs. Putting agents that inhibit plant growth into water bodies can quickly kill these plants but may cause pollution in other areas. Physical method refers to fishing by hand or machine, which is slower but does not generate pollutants.

5. Introduce plants and animals that inhibit plant growth. By utilizing the nature of the food chain and introducing natural enemies of enriched plants, enriched plants in water can be effectively removed. However, this method also has risks because it is very likely to cause biological invasion - if the newly introduced animals and plants have no natural enemies in the water body, they will reproduce in large numbers and affect the water quality.

6. Research new methods. The treatment methods we have come up with now have certain limitations. Either they cannot solve the problem fundamentally, or secondary pollution will occur. Therefore, researching new methods without side effects is the most important thing students should do now!
