How to preserve ripe kiwifruit

How to preserve ripe kiwifruit

For fully ripe kiwifruit, the shelf life is relatively short. Try to eat them all to avoid spoilage. If you don’t finish eating them, it’s best to put them in the refrigerator so that they can be stored for a relatively longer time. When we buy kiwis, if we want to eat them as soon as possible, it is best to choose fully ripe ones. If we buy a lot, it is best to buy slightly harder ones.

How to store ripe kiwi fruit

1. Storage in the refrigerator: Raw kiwi fruit can be stored in the refrigerator (about 1-5 degrees) for about a month. When you want to eat it, take it out a few days in advance to ripen it. You can put the kiwi fruit you want to eat together with ripe bananas and apples and eat it after it becomes soft.

2. Store in a cool place: After purchasing kiwi fruit, you should place it in a cool place. Put the kiwi fruit in a box or plastic bag, it is best not to seal it completely (if it is completely sealed, there will be a smell of rotten wine when you open it next time). It is best not to place kiwis in a ventilated place, as this will easily cause the moisture in their contents to be lost, making the hard ones harder and the soft ones less moist.

Precautions for storing kiwifruit: Refrigeration, protection from light, and boxing are all effective ways to increase the shelf life of kiwifruit. In addition, it should be noted that careful selection in the early stages can also increase the preservation time. When storing, you should first pick out the soft kiwis with damaged surfaces, otherwise these kiwis will emit "ethylene" and "ripen" other kiwis, which is not conducive to long-term storage.

How to ripen kiwi fruit

1. Use apples to ripen kiwis

You can put a few apples and the harder kiwis you bought in a paper bag, tie the bag, and leave it for two or three days. This will help the kiwis become soft. This is done by utilizing ethylene, a gas emitted by apples, to ripen the apples. Not only apples can ripen kiwis, but other fruits such as bananas, pears, vegetables and tomatoes can also ripen kiwis. But remember not to keep them for too long, otherwise the kiwis will rot.

Editor's reminder: Fruit ripening method is a more reliable method and you can choose it with confidence. Moreover, the more apples, bananas and other fruits you put in, the shorter the time it takes for the kiwi fruit to ripen, and the sooner you can eat it.

2. Use toothpicks to ripen kiwifruit

Wash the purchased kiwifruits with water first, then use a clean toothpick to poke a few small holes on the kiwifruits, then put them in a plastic bag, tie them up, and leave them for a few days, which will speed up the ripening process. You can also use a knife to make a few small cuts on the outside of the kiwi fruit, which can also help ripen the kiwi fruit. This is because small wounds can cause kiwifruit to produce ethylene, which can accelerate the ripening of kiwifruit. Editor's reminder: Although this method is good, small wounds will breed some microorganisms, which will affect the quality of kiwi fruit, so it is not recommended to use it.

3. Increase the ambient temperature for fruit placement.

The higher the storage temperature of kiwifruit, the more active the fruit's metabolism and the faster it ripens. Therefore, it is best not to put the raw kiwifruit you just bought in the refrigerator. If you put it in a box at room temperature for a day or two, it will soften faster than if you store it in the refrigerator.

Editor's reminder: If kiwis are left at room temperature, it is easier for bacteria to grow, so be sure to always pay attention to the appearance of the kiwis during storage to prevent them from rotting and spoiling. When eating kiwi fruit, the skin should be peeled.
