Which topical medications are effective for onychomycosis?

If you are not careful when washing your hands or cutting your nails, you may get onychomycosis. There are many reasons for onychomycosis. When the fungus directly invades and penetrates the nail bed, you can apply drugs that can kill bacteria and fungi, such as urea ointment, iodine tincture, and potassium permanganate solution, which can effectively treat onychomycosis.

1. Iodine, salicylic acid, glacial acetic acid:

Apply 3 to 4 times a day. Scrape the diseased nail thinly before use. You can continue to apply the medicine until the new nail grows out. Generally, treatment is required for 3 to 6 months. When applying the medicine, avoid applying it to the skin around the nails to avoid damaging the skin.

2. Ciclopirox Ointment:

Apply the medicine to the diseased nail 3 times a day and continue applying until the new nail grows out. Generally, treatment is required for 3-6 months.

3 Potassium permanganate solution:

Soak in potassium permanganate solution for half an hour for a week, then soak every 2-3 days until you grow hard and healthy nails.

4. Urea ointment:

The formula of urea ointment is: urea, wool, white wax, and vaseline. This urea preparation is a strong keratinolytic agent. When applying it, protect the skin around the diseased nail with gauze, fix it with tape, and then wrap it with gauze. Change the dressing once a day. Use a knife to separate the nail plate each time to separate the nail plate from the nail bed.

1. It is not advisable to use corrosive or highly medicinal drugs. You should choose drugs according to the severity of the disease under the guidance of a doctor to avoid deformation of the nails after they have grown well.

2. After onychomycosis infection, no matter the size of the infected area, the bacteria are present in the entire nail and surrounding skin. When applying medicine, the entire nail must be applied, rather than just the infected lesion.

3. Topical drugs have poor permeability, so the diseased nail should be thinned before application. However, the so-called soft nail ointment should be used with caution. So far, there is no drug that can directly peel off the diseased nail after application.

Suffering from onychomycosis will seriously affect your image. It is important to adopt correct and effective onychomycosis treatment methods in a timely manner. At the same time, patients also need to have enough knowledge about onychomycosis. Many people do not take onychomycosis seriously, thinking it is just a minor disease, but experts remind patients not to take this disease lightly!
