What color is the nasal mucus caused by rhinitis

Rhinitis is probably the most troublesome disease for people with low immunity. Mild allergic rhinitis has no impact on the patient's life, and there will be no sticky, yellow or blue nasal discharge. Most of the nasal discharge is clear. Moderate to severe rhinitis has begun to interfere with the patient's life, not only affecting sleep, but also causing the nasal discharge to turn yellow and blue, leading to a decline in quality of life, poor academic performance, and greatly reduced work efficiency. However, different types of rhinitis cause different colors of nasal mucus. Next, let’s take a look at the colors of different rhinitis.

1. Allergic rhinitis :

The symptoms include continuous paroxysmal sneezing, nasal congestion, itchy nose, and large amounts of clear nasal discharge. It may also be accompanied by eye symptoms such as itchy eyes and conjunctival congestion. Common physical signs include pale nasal mucosa, edema, and watery nasal secretions. It is an allergic disease. It is mostly caused by contact with allergens, with rapid onset and recovery. Suffering from this disease, I have frequent runny nose during the day, nasal congestion at night, and poor sleep, which seriously affects my work and study.

2. Acute rhinitis :

Acute rhinitis is an acute inflammatory disease of the nasal mucosa caused by a viral infection. We usually call it a cold. In the early stage, there will be clear watery nasal discharge, and after 3 to 5 days, purulent mucus secretions will form, which is white and sticky. Also known as the common cold. Symptoms include nasal congestion, runny nose, fever, etc., and the course of the disease is usually 7 to 10 days. There are more than 200 viruses associated with acute rhinitis. It can occur in all seasons, but is more common in winter. Acute rhinitis is the most common disease in humans and occurs in countries around the world. Adults usually have an average of 6 to 10 cases per year (school-age children are infected 2 to 5 times, and children are infected up to 12 times per year on average). Due to the degeneration of the immune system, the annual incidence rate among the elderly has increased.

3. Chronic rhinitis :

The nasal discharge is mostly white and yellow purulent, lasts for a long time, and is accompanied by nasal congestion and headache, and the symptoms worsen after a cold. Most of them are caused by repeated attacks of acute rhinitis or incomplete treatment. Chronic rhinitis is a chronic inflammation of the nasal mucosa and submucosa. Its main characteristics are that the inflammation persists for more than three months or recurs repeatedly, is protracted and does not heal, and cannot return to normal during the intervals. There is no clear pathogenic microorganism, accompanied by varying degrees of nasal congestion, increased secretions, swelling or thickening of the nasal mucosa, and other disorders. According to the pathology and degree of functional disorder of chronic rhinitis, it can be divided into chronic simple rhinitis and chronic hypertrophic rhinitis. The former is a chronic inflammation of the nasal mucosa characterized by swelling of the nasal mucosa and increased secretions, while the latter is a chronic inflammation of the nasal cavity characterized by localized or diffuse hyperplasia and hypertrophy of the mucosa, submucosa and even bone.
