What is the normal range of hip joint in infants and young children?

As the baby grows, parents need to closely observe the changes in their child's body. For babies of different ages, there will be a normal range for indicators such as height and weight. As long as the relevant indicators are within the normal range, being slightly higher or lower is normal. However, if some indicators are obviously higher or lower, then you must be especially careful. The following introduces the normal hip joint range for infants and young children.

Normal range of hip joint in infants and young children:

The hip joint is the main support point when the human body bears weight. With the existence of the hip joint, people can do physical work and walk steadily, so the hip joint plays a very important role in the human body. However, for infants and young children, it is common for the hip joint to not grow within the normal range. So what is the normal range for the hip joint of infants and young children?

Normal range of hip joint in infants and young children

The normal range of the hip joint in a newborn is 30° to 40°, 23° to 28° at 1 year old, and 20° to 25° at 3 years old. An angle greater than this indicates incomplete development of the acetabulum. As age increases, the pathological changes become more severe and the treatment effect becomes worse.

For patients suspected of congenital hip dislocation, pelvic AP radiographs of both hip joints should be taken more than 3 months after birth. The development of the hip joint is often measured by the inclination of the acetabulum angle. For children under 1 year old, the pedal sling method is used.

What to do if your baby has abnormal hip joints

If subluxation or dislocation of the hip joint is found 8 to 9 weeks after birth, a stirrup sling can be used for 6 to 9 months. Only the extension of the hip joint is restricted; other activities are not restricted. Except for some children with factors that hinder reduction in the hip joint, the vast majority of children can achieve reduction treatment and aseptic necrosis of the femoral head will not occur.

The key to the prognosis of this disease lies in early diagnosis. The earlier the treatment, the better the effect. A straight line connecting the center points of the acetabular cartilages on both sides and extending it is called the Y line. Then draw a line from the center point of the Y-line cartilage to the most prominent point of the outer upper edge of the bony acetabulum top. This line is called the C-line. The angle between the C-line and the Y-line is the acetabular angle or acetabular index.

The normal range of the hip joint depends on the baby's age. The hip joints of babies of different ages are different. If you find that your baby's hip joint is abnormal, parents must treat the baby as soon as possible. Not just this disease, as long as the baby is sick, you should see a doctor as soon as possible to avoid missing the best time to treat the baby.
