What is keloid?

What is keloid?

Keloid is a relatively common skin disease, also known as fibroma. It is a phenomenon caused by internal proliferation of the body. External trauma or skin damage to the body can easily lead to keloid. Hyperplasia on the skin surface presents the phenomenon of skin tumor, which can cause burning and itching of the skin, and also lead to the extension of blood vessels under the skin.

Keloid

Keloid is called keloid or giant scar in traditional Chinese medicine and is a type of fibroma. This disease is related to physical constitution and is the product of excessive proliferation of fibrous connective tissue. If the epidermis of people with scar-prone constitution is damaged, such as by trauma, mosquito bites, etc., there is a high possibility of forming keloids.

Keloids are tumor-like proliferations that protrude from the surface of the skin. They are smooth, shiny red, and often have dilated capillaries extending outward. The skin is damaged to the point where the edges protrude outward, the crab claws become deformed, and there is an itchy or tingling or burning sensation. Since the pain is acute, it may be due to the sensitivity of nerve endings or the formation of microneuromas, and even the slightest touch of clothing may cause pain. Keloids often occur on the chest, shoulders, neck, back and auricles. It can occur in both men and women.

Classification

Scars (keloids) can be roughly divided into two categories: primary and secondary.

Primary scars (keloids) are mostly found on the chest or behind the shoulders. They start out as small red dots with itching, gradually growing from small to large and from soft to hard. They are red or dark red in color and may be cord-shaped, butterfly-shaped, round or irregular in shape.

Secondary keloid scars are also called hypertrophic keloid scars, which are divided into:

Acne keloids and cancerous scars. It is mostly caused by burns, trauma, acne, infection and suppuration, or due to surgery, laser, freezing, skin grafting, and hormone drug sealing, which will cause excessive proliferation of damaged tissue and destruction and degeneration of subcutaneous tissue. The protruding skin is red or dark red with itching or tingling, and some have obvious capillaries extending outward. The symptoms tend to worsen after drinking alcohol or eating spicy and other irritating foods.

Pathological mechanism

Many people do not know the common knowledge about keloids, which leads to delaying the treatment of the disease and making the condition worse. Therefore, we will introduce the situation of keloids here so that everyone can understand it. The pathological mechanism of keloid is:

1) Stagnation of Qi and blood, accumulation of dampness and heat. The early symptoms of scarring are stagnation of Qi and blood, accumulation of dampness and heat. Scars on the surface spread everywhere, blisters sometimes appear, there is exudation, and obvious itching.

2) Deficiency of Qi and Yin, dryness of blood and tense tendons occur secondary to burns by water or fire. The entire layer of skin and deep tissues, as well as the Qi, blood and body fluids of the whole body are consumed. After recovery, it is difficult for the skin and deep tissues to restore their original physiological functions, the channels of Qi, blood and body fluids in the body are blocked, and the muscles (scars) and tendons cannot be nourished by Qi, blood and body fluids, resulting in deficiency of Qi and Yin, dryness of blood and tense tendons.

3) Scars formed after healing of meridian Bi Yin damage, from the perspective of local syndrome differentiation, belong to the category of carbuncle, which is caused by skin damage, meridian obstruction, imbalance of Ying and Wei, and stagnation of Qi and blood. It is better to diagnose it based on blood stasis.

4) The disease is caused by the combination of evil toxins and turbid air, blood stasis, phlegm and dampness in the body. The main reason for this disease is skin trauma, weak vital energy, evil toxins entering the body and blocking qi and blood. The evil turbidity cannot be discharged, and blood stasis causes swelling. Although the wound has healed, the evil turbidity has not been discharged. After 1-2 years or 3-6 months, scars are formed at the healed area.
