What is baking soda? Can baking soda replace borax?

Baking soda is a white powder with many uses. Generally, when you wash fruits at home, there is white stuff on them, which can be cleaned with baking soda, and the chlorine on the surface can be easily removed. Smells in the house and odors in shoes can also be removed with baking soda. Borax is toxic to a certain extent and cannot be used casually. Long-term consumption can easily cause poisoning. So, can borax be replaced by baking soda?

baking soda

Sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO?). Commonly known as baking soda. White fine crystals, less soluble in water than sodium carbonate. It is also an industrial chemical. When the solid temperature is above 50°C, it begins to gradually decompose into sodium carbonate, carbon dioxide and water, and completely decomposes at 270°C. Sodium bicarbonate is an acid salt formed by the neutralization of a strong base and a weak acid, and it exhibits weak alkalinity when dissolved in water. This property allows it to be used as a leavening agent in food preparation. Sodium bicarbonate will leave residual sodium carbonate after reaction. Using too much will make the finished product have an alkaline taste.

Properties: Sodium bicarbonate is white crystals or opaque monoclinic fine crystals. Specific gravity: 2.15. Odorless, non-toxic, salty taste, soluble in water sodium bicarbonate (2), slightly soluble in ethanol. It is soluble in 10 parts of water at 25°C and in 12 parts of water at about 18°C. Its aqueous solution is slightly alkaline due to hydrolysis. It is stable at room temperature, easily decomposes when heated, gradually deliquesces at temperatures above 50°C, and completely loses carbon dioxide at 270°C. It remains unchanged in dry air, but slowly deliquesces in humid air.

Borax

Borax, also known as sodium tetraborate, with the molecular formula Na2B4O7.10H2O, is a very important boron-containing mineral and boron compound. It is usually a white powder containing colorless crystals and is easily soluble in water. Borax has a wide range of uses. It can be used as a cleaner, cosmetics, pesticide, and can also be used to prepare buffer solutions and other boron compounds. Borax often refers to sodium tetraborate decahydrate, i.e. Na2B4O7.10H2O, but commercially available borax is often partially weathered.

Properties: Colorless translucent crystal or white crystalline powder. Odorless, salty taste. Specific gravity: 1.73. All crystal water is lost at 380℃. It is easily soluble in water and glycerin, slightly soluble in alcohol. The aqueous solution is weakly alkaline. Borax can weather slowly in the air. It becomes a colorless glassy substance when melted. Borax has a bactericidal effect and is harmful to humans when taken orally.

Boiling point: 1575℃

Melting point: about 880℃
