What's the matter with white blood cells in urine routine examination

During a routine urine test, an increase in white blood cells was found. Generally speaking, an increase of 1 to 2 white blood cells is a normal phenomenon. However, it should be noted that if you suffer from diseases such as pyelonephritis, cystitis, urethritis, or renal tuberculosis, the white blood cells in the urine will increase during a routine urine test, so you should pay attention to preventing infection in your daily life.

1. Urinalysis white blood cells are the white blood cells among the three types of cells in urine routine examination. Normal urine may contain a small amount of white blood cells. Generally, the number of white blood cells per high-power field (HP) of centrifuged urine is 1 to 2, which is still normal. If there are more than 5 white blood cells per high-power field, it is called microscopic pyuria. Microscopic pyuria indicates purulent inflammation of the urethra, such as pyelonephritis, cystitis or urethritis, renal tuberculosis, etc. In glomerulonephritis, the number of white blood cells in the urine may also increase slightly.

2. Generally speaking, when the white blood cell count is high, it is caused by urinary tract infection, and sometimes there may not be symptoms of urinary tract irritation. You can drink more water and urinate more often to prevent infection. Antibiotics can be taken when symptoms occur. In addition, if you are a woman, gynecological diseases can cause an increase in white blood cells in the urine, which is caused by secretions contaminating the urine, so if you are a woman, you should check for gynecological problems. Men and young adults are less likely to develop urinary tract infections.

3. Precautions for routine urine microscopy

1. The urine sample must be fresh, otherwise after being left for a few hours, the red blood cells and white blood cells may be destroyed and the pyuria will disappear.

2. The urine sample must be clean. Women should clean their vulva to avoid mixing in leucorrhea. If there are a large number of polygonal epithelial cells in the urine sediment, they may have been mixed into the leucorrhea, and it is advisable to collect a clean urine sample for re-examination.

3. In patients with urinary tract infection, pyuria is often intermittent, so repeated examinations are necessary before a conclusion can be drawn.

4. The use of antibiotics may affect the accuracy of the examination.
