Many people find that there seems to be a layer of white film inside their eyes, which affects their vision when they look at things. What is the reason for the film on the eyes? In fact, this situation is likely caused by polyps growing in the eye. Generally speaking, eye polyps do not cause any harm to our eyes, but if you want to treat eye polyps, you can also remove them through surgery. In a normal person's eyes, the boundary between the black pupil and the white pupil is very clear. However, some people grow a piece of extra flesh on the white of their eyeballs, which is shaped like a triangle, and most patients don’t know how to treat it. In medicine, we usually call this triangular-shaped meat "pterygium". 1. What is pterygium Pterygium is located near the corneal margin in the palpebral fissure area and invades the cornea to varying degrees. It is named because of its shape similar to the "wings" of insects. It is commonly known as "fish meat" or "pterygium". Pterygium is a common and frequently occurring ophthalmic disease, which is more common in men than in women. It is usually found on the inner side of the eyeball, occasionally on the outer side, and sometimes on both the inner and temporal sides. It can be identified with the naked eye. 2. Causes of pterygium The exact cause of pterygium is still unclear, but it is generally believed to be the result of the combined action of internal and external factors. Among the external factors, the main ones are environmental factors. Ultraviolet rays in sunlight, wind, sand, dust, dryness, etc. are all important factors affecting the incidence of the disease. The internal causes are mainly personal factors, such as local inflammatory reactions and stimulation of the eyes, and the incidence rate will increase with age. In addition, other environmental factors may aggravate its progression, such as welders, fishermen, farmers, seafarers, and other workers working outdoors are susceptible to this disease. 3. Classification of pterygium There are two types of pterygium. One is the progressive type, in which the fibrovascular tissue below the conjunctiva of the pterygium becomes wide, congested, and thickened. The body is triangular in shape and extends toward the surface of the cornea and sclera. The head is obviously bulging and invades the surface of the cornea. In severe cases, it may even block the entire pupil, leading to blindness. One is the static type, that is, the pterygium stops growing when it reaches the edge of the cornea. It is not congested, is slightly red, has a flat head, and the fibrovascular tissue under the conjunctiva is thin and transparent. It is in a relatively static state, but it does not disappear on its own. 4. Differences from pseudopterygium and palpebral fissure In the early stage of pterygium, most people have no subjective symptoms or only mild discomfort. After the onset of the disease, there are generally the following manifestations: 1. Mild eye irritation and dryness. When the pterygium extends to the cornea, irregular astigmatism is produced due to the traction; 2. Pterygium changes the appearance of the eyes, causing congestion and affecting their beauty; 3. Because the pterygium grows into the surface of the cornea and blocks the sleep hole, it causes visual impairment. In very serious cases, it affects the eye movement to varying degrees. |
