Why does running give me stomachache

Many people often experience abdominal pain when doing various sports. This symptom is called abdominal pain during exercise in medicine. There are many reasons for this symptom. If you want to relieve the symptoms in time, you can only find the cause according to your physical condition. If the pain is severe, it will affect the patient's normal work and life. So why does running cause abdominal pain?

First, why does running cause stomach pain? Pain in the upper right abdomen is mostly caused by lack of exercise. People who lack exercise require more oxygen during exercise than well-trained athletes, so they breathe more rapidly. Under normal circumstances, when a person inhales, the negative pressure in the chest cavity increases, which is beneficial to the blood return to the hepatic vein and other places. When breathing is rapid, the chest cavity pressure decreases, and the blood return to the liver is blocked, resulting in liver congestion and causing liver pain. Patients with chronic hepatitis, cholecystitis, gastric ulcer or chronic appendicitis may also experience pain when participating in strenuous exercise due to stimulation such as pulling and vibration of the affected area.

Second, running immediately after a meal is a major cause of abdominal pain during running. The stomach is full of food that has just been digested, and the body is shaken during running, causing abdominal pain. During exercise, the stomach and intestines spasm and cause abdominal pain. In mild cases, the symptoms are bloating, and in severe cases, colic may occur. The pain is mostly located in the navel.

Third, how to prevent and relieve pain? First of all, do not participate in running immediately after a meal. Rest for 30 minutes before running. You should do sufficient warm-up exercises before running. Secondly, don’t panic if you experience abdominal pain while running. First, adjust your breathing, inhale through the nose and exhale through the mouth, gently squeeze your abdomen and pause running to rest to relieve the abdominal pain.

Why does running cause stomach pain? During running exercise, the breathing during running disrupts the even and rhythmic breathing, which reduces the body's oxygen absorption, causing hypoxia in the body, and fatigue of the respiratory muscles. When the diaphragm is fatigued, the massage effect on the liver will decrease, causing abdominal pain due to congestion and swelling of the liver. The blood supply to skeletal muscles increases during exercise. The increased blood volume is mainly drawn from the internal organs. Therefore, the blood vessels controlling the internal organs contract and the blood supply is insufficient, which causes spasmodic contraction of the gastrointestinal smooth muscles and causes abdominal pain.
