Preparation before colonoscopy

Preparation before colonoscopy

If a person has intestinal diseases, he or she needs to go to the hospital for intestinal treatment in time. The main method of treatment in the hospital is colonoscopy. A colonoscopy requires a lot of preparation in advance. Because the human intestines are not actually clean, the intestines need to be cleaned before colonoscopy treatment. Let's take a look at the preparations before colonoscopy.

(1) The specialist has assessed your need and ability to undergo a colonoscopy. The doctor will issue a colonoscopy application form for you. Colonoscopy is generally safe, but before the operation the doctor will inform you of the possible risks and ask you to sign an informed consent form.

(2) Do not eat red or seedy foods, such as watermelon, tomatoes, kiwi fruit, etc., two days before the examination to avoid affecting colonoscopy observation. Eat semi-liquid foods with little residue, such as porridge and noodles, for lunch and dinner the day before the examination. Do not eat vegetables, fruits and other foods with a lot of residue, or dairy products. Prepare a small amount of snacks and chocolate to eat at the end of the colonoscopy.

(3) Those who suffer from long-term constipation should inform their doctor. Three days before the examination, they can take motility drugs such as mosapride and trimibutine, use enema to stimulate bowel movements, or take a small amount of lactulose or a small dose of magnesium sulfate solution to ensure at least one bowel movement per day.

(4) Perform colon cleansing at least 4-6 hours before the examination. If the colonoscopy is done in the morning, fast for dinner the day before, take colon cleansing solution orally between 10 and 12 pm, and fast for breakfast on the day of the procedure;

(5) Enema solution preparation and oral method: The enema methods in different hospitals are slightly different.

(6) If no stool or only semi-formed stool is passed within 2-4 hours after taking the entire enema solution, you should go to the hospital and take an appropriate amount of polyethylene glycol electrolyte solution or perform a cleansing enema under the guidance of a doctor.

(7) If you experience any abnormal symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, dizziness, or palpitations during oral enema, please stop taking the enema solution and come to the hospital to contact your doctor.

(8) Preoperative hypertension medications can be taken, and diabetes medications can be discontinued once before surgery. Aspirin, warfarin and other medications must be discontinued for at least 3-5 days before examination. Other medications will depend on the patient's condition and will be decided by the doctor.

(9) Please bring your medical records, original colonoscopy report, etc. before the examination to help the doctor understand and compare changes in your condition. Please keep your valuables, mobile phones, diamond rings, necklaces, etc. safe before the examination.

(10) When choosing painless colonoscopy, patients must be accompanied and picked up by family members or friends. Those who are assessed by the anesthesiologist to be suitable for painless examination must sign an informed consent form for anesthesia. Do not schedule important work activities or social events on the day of the examination.
