What does stool culture test for?

People's physical health can affect all aspects, especially the performance of various systems of people's body can most timely reflect the health status of the body. Among them, the color and state of stool can reflect the digestive system diseases or other diseases of the human body, and checking stool has become one of the important physical examination methods. The method is to perform a stool culture. Let’s take a look at what stool culture checks.

Feces is the food residue that the human digestive system takes in from the mouth and excretes from the body after a series of digestion and absorption in the stomach and intestines. Its shape, color, and composition can directly reflect whether the function of the entire digestive system of the human body (including the stomach, duodenum, liver, gallbladder, jejunum, and ileum) is sound, and whether there are any abnormalities or local infection lesions.

Clinical significance:

The significance of stool culture examination is to determine whether the stool is mainly composed of Escherichia coli, otherwise it is a bacterial flora imbalance. In the case of dysbiosis, the main pathogens should be detected accurately and as quickly as possible, and antibiotics should be used early to adjust the flora. The main pathogens in feces and the diseases they cause are:

(1) Salmonella can cause typhoid fever;

(2) Shigella can cause dysentery;

(3) Escherichia coli O157 can cause hemorrhagic enteritis;

(4) Vibrio cholerae can cause cholera;

(5) Staphylococcus aureus can cause purulent enteritis;

(6) Proteus and others can cause acute enteritis;

(7) Candida albicans and other fungi may reflect excessive use of antibiotics, and the use of antibiotics should be stopped as soon as possible.

It can be seen that stool examination and culture have great clinical significance. It directly reflects the functions of various organs in the human digestive system and the sources of outbreaks of some infectious diseases.
