Minimally invasive kidney stone removal

Minimally invasive kidney stone removal

Kidney stones are a common disease. Modern people may develop kidney stones due to reasons such as not liking to drink water and irregular lifestyle. The occurrence of kidney stones can have a significant impact on the patient's life. There are many methods for treating kidney stones clinically. In addition to traditional surgical treatment, minimally invasive kidney stone removal is currently very popular among patients. So what is minimally invasive kidney stone removal, and how can this method be used to treat diseases?

There are two types of minimally invasive kidney stone removal surgeries:

Fiber nephroscope non-invasive stone removal: Fiber nephroscope minimally invasive stone removal is currently the most advanced technology for the treatment of urinary stones in China. It can use an ultra-microcatheter to enter the human urethra, locate the stone, and then use a stone basket to remove the stone, or use a laser to break the stone before removing it;

Minimally invasive percutaneous nephrolithotomy: Minimally invasive percutaneous nephrolithotomy is commonly known as "hole punching and stone removal". This method of stone removal only requires a 1 cm skin incision on the lower back, a thin puncture needle directly enters the kidney through the incision, a nephroscope is inserted, and an ultrasonic ballistic lithotripter or neodymium laser is used to break up and remove the stones. It has minimal trauma and reduces the pain of stone removal for patients. The patient can get out of bed and move around the next day after the operation. It is minimally invasive, safe and effective. [1]

1. Minor trauma, less bleeding and low complications

The expansion of the minimally invasive percutaneous nephrolithotomy channel is 12-20F less than that of traditional percutaneous nephrolithotomy. Therefore, minimally invasive percutaneous nephrolithotomy reduces trauma to the minimum, and the puncture and dilation channel from the skin to the renal parenchyma is the shortest and the dilation channel is small, so there is less bleeding during the operation and even less bleeding after the operation, and blood transfusion is generally not required.

2. Wide range of surgical indications

When using a minimally invasive nephroscope or ureteroscope, due to the slender body of the scope, it has a large range of swinging and rotation after insertion and can reach the renal pelvis, upper ureter and most renal calyces, and can even enter the small calyx through the narrow renal calyx neck, thus increasing the stone clearance rate. The scope of surgical indications is wider than that of traditional percutaneous nephrolithotomy. However, all kidney stones that require open surgery are indications. Even stones that are difficult to treat with open surgery, such as recurrent stones, calyx stones with calyx neck stenosis, diverticulum stones, and severe stones after extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy, can be treated with minimally invasive percutaneous nephrolithotomy.

3. Conventional one-stage surgery to shorten hospital stay

Minimally invasive percutaneous nephrolithotomy is routinely performed as a one-stage stone removal surgery. It is easily accepted by patients because of its small trauma, less bleeding, low complications, high surgical stone clearance rate, simplified surgical operation, shortened operation time, rapid postoperative recovery and short hospitalization time.
