After breathing in the cold wind, there is blood in the sputum

We all know that the weather becomes colder in autumn and winter, and there will be some cold wind in the air. When we go out, if we don’t wear masks, it is especially easy for cold air to be inhaled into the stomach, causing a cold. Sometimes it can also cause tonsillitis and coughing up phlegm. So why is there blood in the phlegm after inhaling cold wind?

If young people have blood in their sputum, it may be caused by lung diseases such as bronchitis, pneumonia, bronchiectasis, and tuberculosis. If people over 40 years old have blood in their sputum, they should be careful to distinguish whether it comes from the nasal cavity, trachea, or oral cavity. Most of the mucus coming from the nasal cavity is exhaled by sucking back the nasal mucus into the mouth, while that coming from the trachea and bronchi is coughed out.

1. It may be due to the dry climate, which is related to the season.

2. Chronic pharyngitis may also cause blood in the sputum, especially during an attack.

3. Acute and chronic infections of the trachea and bronchi.

4. Rare diseases such as tumors, tuberculosis, bronchiectasis, etc. cannot be ruled out. Bronchiectasis is a disorder in which the muscle and elastic components of the proximal medium-sized bronchial walls are destroyed, resulting in abnormal, irreversible dilation and deformation of the lumen.

5. Other possible diseases include: hypertrophic pharyngitis, actinomycosis, hydatidiform mole, Kartagener syndrome, pulmonary trichomoniasis, etc.

Clinical manifestations

In addition to blood-streaked sputum, the following are manifestations of the primary disease:

1. Hypertrophic pharyngitis

Dryness and itching in the throat, foreign body sensation in the throat, dry cough, sore throat, etc.

2. Actinomycosis

Subcutaneous nodules, edema, abscesses, difficulty opening the mouth, headache, sputum, etc.

3. Pulmonary geotrichum

Cough, sputum, fatigue, chest tightness, itching, headache, abdominal pain, etc.

examine

1. Chest X-ray examination: to distinguish lung infection, lung cancer or cardiovascular disease, etc.

2. Sputum examination: Check the sputum color and volume, and perform sputum bacterial culture.

3. General blood and coagulation tests.

To rule out lung cancer, chest X-ray or chest CT examination and sputum exfoliative cytology examination can be done. These two methods are simple, economical and less painful, but the positive rate of sputum exfoliative cytology examination is not high.
