Experts believe that the normal human spine is curved. The physiological curvature of the neck is forward curvature, the chest is backward curvature, and the waist is also forward curvature. If the physiological curvature of the neck becomes straight, it is abnormal. When a normal person sleeps with a high pillow, whether lying on his back or on his side, the physiological state of the cervical spine will change, which will cause excessive pressure on the neck. Over time, the neck muscles will become strained and contracted, causing slight changes in the position of the cervical spine, causing irritation or compression of the neck nerve roots and blood vessels, resulting in numbness or pain, dizziness, nausea, headache, decreased vision, hearing loss, and even insufficient blood supply to the brain, acute heart failure and other symptoms. High pillow is one of the common causes of stiff neck and cervical spondylosis.

Some friends say that I don’t sleep with a high pillow, I sleep with a low pillow; some friends say that I don’t sleep with a pillow at all! The function of a pillow is to maintain the normal physiological curve of the human body and ensure that the physiological curvature of the neck does not deform during sleep. If the pillow is too low, not only will the neck be unable to relax, but it will also destroy the normal curvature of the cervical spine, causing soreness in the neck and shoulders after waking up. At the same time, it can easily cause unbalanced blood supply, resulting in congestion and swelling of the nasal mucosa, which will affect breathing.

Generally speaking, the pillow should not be too high or too low. Under normal circumstances, it is best to keep it at shoulder level. Such a pillow will not only make you sleep comfortably, but also help you fall asleep quickly. If a person is used to lying on his back, the cervical spine should be naturally curved upwards, and the pillow should be about the height of a fist, 8-13 cm. When lying on your side, the cervical and lumbar spine should be in a horizontal line, and the pillow height should be about the same as the width of the shoulder, about 13-16 cm. You can choose the height of the pillow according to your usual sleeping position.
