Although pain occurs frequently in the human body, most people find that their pain comes without warning and they don't even know what causes it. Some people experience pain on the side of the sole of the foot. This pain can affect a person's ability to support the body, so the cause of the pain on the side of the sole of the foot should be found as soon as possible. So what exactly is causing the pain on the side of the foot? Lateral foot pain refers to persistent pain on the outside of the ankle. It hurts when you walk or when you turn your ankle in a certain direction. It hurts a lot when you press the midpoint of the outside of the foot, but not when you press in other directions. Care should be taken to differentiate pain caused by lumbar disc herniation from ankle pain. Treatment should focus on finding the primary disease causing the pain on the outside of the foot and treating it accordingly. Causes and common diseases The main diseases that cause pain on the outside of the foot are: ① Achilles tendinitis; ② Calcaneus spur; ③Calcaneus periostitis; ④Injury to the subcalcaneal fat pad; ⑤ Calcaneus fracture; ⑥ Calcaneus subcutaneous bursitis; ⑦ Tarsal sinus soft tissue strain; ⑧Calcaneus tuberculosis, tumor, etc. examine ①Physical signs: Pain on the outside of the foot. ②Auxiliary examination: X-ray examination. Differential Diagnosis 1. Radiating pain in the feet. Since lumbar disc herniation mostly occurs in the lumbar and lumbosacral intervertebral space, and the sciatic nerve comes from the lumbar and sacral nerve roots, patients with lumbar disc herniation often have sciatica or pain that starts in the buttocks and gradually radiates to the posterior and lateral thigh, lateral calf, dorsum of the foot, lateral sole of the foot, and toes. Central protrusion often causes bilateral sciatica. When the intra-abdominal pressure increases due to coughing, sneezing, urination or defecation, the electric-like radiating pain in the lower limbs will worsen. Leg pain that is more severe than back pain is one of the main signs of a herniated disc. 2. Ankle pain The "冂"-shaped articular socket formed by the inferior articular surface of the tibia and the medial and lateral malleolus articular surfaces accommodates the talus pulley (articular head). Because the pulley articular surface is wide in front and narrow in the back, when the foot is dorsiflexed, the wider front part enters the socket and the joint is stable; but during plantar flexion, such as when walking downhill, the narrower rear part of the pulley enters the socket, the ankle joint is loose and can move laterally, and the ankle joint is prone to sprains at this time, among which inversion injuries are the most common, because the lateral malleolus is longer and lower than the medial malleolus, which can prevent excessive eversion of the talus. Treatment principles Find out the primary disease that causes pain on the outside of the foot and treat it accordingly. |
