A brief analysis of the early symptoms of laryngeal cancer

A brief analysis of the early symptoms of laryngeal cancer

What are the early symptoms of laryngeal cancer? Laryngeal cancer is a malignant tumor originating from the epithelial tissue of the laryngeal mucosa. The most common laryngeal cancer is laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma. It is more common in middle-aged and elderly men. The occurrence of this cancer is related to factors such as smoking, alcoholism, long-term inhalation of harmful substances and papillomavirus infection. Generally, the first thing affected by laryngeal cancer patients is their speech. Early detection and early treatment have a higher chance of cure. The early symptoms of laryngeal cancer are as follows.

1. Stubborn hoarseness

Hoarseness is caused by laryngeal cancer

The earliest signal. Laryngeal cancer is a tumor that grows on the vocal cords. Even if it is small, it will cause hoarseness. Any adult with unexplained hoarseness that lasts for more than two weeks should undergo a detailed throat examination and should not be taken lightly. Because the patient does not feel any pain or itching at this time, it is often mistakenly believed to be caused by a "cold" or "pharyngitis." However, hoarseness caused by colds and inflammation will quickly improve as the inflammation subsides, while the hoarseness symptoms caused by laryngeal cancer will progressively worsen, and gradually develop into a coarser and hoarse voice, until complete loss of voice.

2. Throat paresthesia

Foreign body sensation, urgency or swallowing discomfort are early symptoms of supraglottic laryngeal cancer. However, the initial symptoms of this type of cancer are often not obvious and are not discovered until the second or third stage. Tracing the medical history can take several months. Therefore, if middle-aged and elderly people have throat discomfort, they should undergo a comprehensive and detailed examination and should not treat it hastily as pharyngeal paresthesia or chronic pharyngitis, which will waste precious treatment opportunities.

3. Reflex pain

When laryngeal cancer is combined with ulcers, inflammation or laryngeal cartilage periostitis, it can cause nerve reflex pain, manifested as ipsilateral headache and ear pain. These symptoms mainly occur in patients with supraglottic tumors.

4. Coughing with blood in sputum

Because tumor stimulation can cause irritating dry coughs, blood in sputum, and patients often feel sticky mucus, so they often "wash their throats". When the tumor grows larger, it will block the airway, making it difficult for tracheal secretions to be discharged, causing respiratory infections, wheezing, and even dyspnea. In the middle and late stages, it will manifest as persistent coughs and changes in pronunciation.

5. Precancerous lesions

Vocal cord polyps can sometimes cause hoarseness, and a few of them can also cause cancer. Therefore, it is best to remove vocal cord polyps surgically as soon as possible, and those who are not suitable for surgery should be followed up regularly. Some laryngeal diseases such as laryngeal pachyderma, laryngeal mucosal leukoplakia, laryngeal papilloma, etc. may also become cancerous, which is called "precancerous lesions" and must be followed up regularly to prevent any accidents.
