What causes kidney cancer?

Kidney cancer, also known as renal cell carcinoma and renal adenocarcinoma, originates from renal tubular epithelial cells and can occur in any part of the renal parenchyma. In recent years, kidney cancer has become a major disease that endangers society and human health, and it has brought great pain and distress to humans. So what are the causes of kidney cancer? Today, let our experts analyze it in detail for you:

The cause of kidney cancer is unknown, but some data show that its incidence is related to smoking, antipyretic and analgesic drugs, hormones, viruses, radiation, coffee, cadmium, thorium, etc.; in addition, workers in some occupations such as petroleum, leather, asbestos and other industries have a high incidence of the disease.

1. Smoking:

A large number of prospective observations have found that smoking is positively correlated with the incidence of renal cancer. The relative risk factor (RR) of renal cancer in smokers is 2, and the risk of renal cancer increases in smokers who have smoked for more than 30 years and smoke unfiltered cigarettes.

2. Obesity and hypertension:

A prospective study published in the November 2, 2000 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine showed that high body mass index (BMI) and high blood pressure are two independent factors associated with an increased risk of kidney cancer in men.

(III) Occupation:

There are reports that workers in metal shops, newspaper printers, coke workers, dry cleaners, and petrochemical workers have an increased risk of kidney cancer and death.

(IV) Radiation:

Statistics show that 26 of 124 tumors caused by a weak alpha particle radiation source were confined to the kidney, but there are no reports on the correlation between radiation exposure and kidney cancer in radiation workers and victims of atomic bomb explosions.

(V) Heredity:

Some families have kidney cancer, which is discovered during chromosome examination. People with a high incidence of kidney cancer have defects in the third pair of chromosomes. Most familial kidney cancers occur at an early age and tend to be multifocal and bilateral. There is a rare genetic disease, hereditary varicocele (VHP), in which up to 28% to 45% of patients develop kidney cancer.

(VI) Food and Drugs:

The survey found that high intake of dairy products, animal protein, fat, and low intake of fruits and vegetables are risk factors for kidney cancer. Coffee may increase the risk of kidney cancer regardless of the amount of coffee consumed. In animal experiments, it has been proven that kidney cancer is caused by female hormones (estrogen), but there is no direct evidence in humans. Abuse of antipyretic analgesics, especially drugs containing phenacetin, can increase the risk of renal pelvic cancer. Diuretics may also be a factor that promotes the occurrence of kidney cancer.

(VII) Other diseases:

In patients who undergo long-term hemodialysis, the incidence of cystic changes (acquired cystic disease) in the atrophic kidneys and subsequent renal cancer has increased. Therefore, patients who have been on hemodialysis for more than 3 years should have their kidneys checked by ultrasound every year. It has been reported that patients with diabetes are more likely to develop renal cancer. 14% of renal cancer patients have diabetes, which is 5 times the prevalence of diabetes in the normal population.

The above is some knowledge about the causes of kidney cancer. I believe you must have understood it. We should develop good habits in life to avoid the harm of the disease. If you have other questions, please consult our online experts or call for consultation. I wish you health and happiness!
