What is the reason for recurring styes?

Stye is a very common eye disease. Although stye will not cause much harm to human health, it will affect daily life. Stye is more likely to recur. Some serious styes may even leave scars. We can prevent styes in daily life, but if you suffer from stye, you need to pay attention to eye hygiene and get more rest.

Causes of recurring styes

1. Not paying attention to eye hygiene and frequently rubbing eyes with dirty hands can lead to repeated eye infections by staphylococci. Once a stye occurs, avoid rubbing your eyes with your hands, use eye drops several times a day to promote swelling reduction, and you can also use hot compresses to care for your eyes. Towels should be disinfected regularly, one towel per person, and changed every three months. Contact lenses should not be worn every day, and time should be left for the eyes to relax.

2. Excessive use of eyes, refractive errors and long-term eye fatigue can easily lead to frequent recurrence of styes. People with trachoma and chronic conjunctivitis are also more likely to get the disease. You should do more eye exercises, let your eyes rest at any time, and avoid staying up late, playing games or working for a long time. Pay attention to protecting your psychological windows.

3. Avoid eating too much irritating food. Traditional Chinese medicine believes that the onset of stye is due to the accumulation of heat in the spleen and stomach and the external wind-heat. Even in winter, hot pot should be consumed in moderation. You should quit smoking and drinking in your daily life to avoid styes.

4. Wearing contact lenses for a long time will cause recurring styes. Contact lenses cover the cornea and easily carry bacteria, so they are not suitable for long-term wear. If you wear them for more than 10 hours a day without paying attention to the cleaning of the lenses, the eyes will become very susceptible to bacterial invasion, causing recurrence of styes. Long-term wearing of contact lenses can also cause damage to the cornea. Therefore, you should appropriately reduce the wearing time of contact lenses to 9 hours a day.

5. Eye inflammation causes recurring styes. If you suffer from eye diseases such as trachoma and chronic conjunctivitis, styes may recur. This is because the eye disease is not treated in time, which reduces your immunity and makes it unable to resist the infection of pathogenic bacteria. The inflammatory bacteria go up along the opening to the meibomian glands, causing a certain infection in the eye tissue, resulting in styes.

6. Prevent diabetes and decreased immunity. People with insufficient immunity or diabetes often suffer from recurrent styes. Therefore, if the stye recurs, you should undergo a full-body examination to rule out the above causes.

Stye recurrence can be treated in the early stage

In the early stages of a stye or before an abscess forms, you can apply local hot and wet compresses three times a day for 20 minutes each time. Hot compress can speed up blood circulation in the eyes and reduce swelling and relieve pain. Apply 0.25% chloramphenicol ointment or other antibiotic ointment to the conjunctival sac. 2 to 3 times a day. Those with systemic symptoms can take antibiotics or sulfonamides, or intramuscularly inject penicillin.

When the external hordeolum is obviously softened locally but has not yet ruptured, anesthesia is not required and the pus can be drained by making an incision parallel to the eyelid margin. When there is an obvious pus head on the membrane surface of the internal hordeolum, 0.5% cane can be dripped three times. After surface anesthesia, use the tip of the knife to make an incision perpendicular to the eyelid margin to drain the pus.

During the treatment, pay attention to rest, do not eat irritating foods, drink water frequently and keep bowel movements smooth. If the stye does not go away for a long time and leaves a nodule, you can go to the hospital after the acute inflammation subsides, make an incision on the eyelid junction surface to scrape out the contents, and cut off the residual capsule and granuloma.
