Effects and side effects of targeted therapy for renal cancer

Effects and side effects of targeted therapy for renal cancer

The treatment of renal cancer is mainly radical nephrectomy, but for patients in the advanced stage, surgical treatment is often difficult, and radiotherapy and chemotherapy are not sensitive to it, so the clinical treatment effect is not ideal. Targeted therapy is a new method for treating advanced cancer that has emerged in recent years. It has the function of blocking tumor blood vessels to cause their specific death, while not affecting the normal tissue cells around the tumor.

Targeted therapy is used for high-risk or advanced renal cancer metastases that cannot be surgically removed. Targeted drugs (such as Nexavar and Sutent) can shrink or eliminate tumors, with an effective rate of 70% to 80%. The therapeutic effect of targeted therapy is better than other treatments, and can significantly improve the patient's quality of life and prolong the life of patients with advanced renal cancer.

Targeted therapy has a significant effect on the treatment of advanced renal cancer, but its side effects are inevitable, the most important of which is the occurrence of hand-foot syndrome, which is manifested as dry skin and peeling of the hands and feet. In addition, some patients will experience high blood pressure, diarrhea, rash, etc. The above symptoms are mostly relieved after reducing or stopping the drug. Patients with severe symptoms who cannot tolerate it need to stop treatment.
