The relationship between esophageal cancer and lifestyle habits

The relationship between esophageal cancer and lifestyle habits

Long-term smoking and drinking are related to the incidence of esophageal cancer. Some studies have shown that the incidence of heavy drinkers is more than 50 times higher than that of non-drinkers, and that of heavy smokers is 7 times higher than that of non-smokers. The incidence of heavy drinkers and smokers is 156 times that of non-drinkers and non-smokers. It is generally believed that people who drink strong alcohol have a greater risk of esophageal cancer. According to a Japanese study, drinking whiskey and local Shochu liquor has the greatest risk, while beer has the least risk. In the Transcay region of Africa, people who smoke their own tobacco leaves with a pipe have a higher incidence of esophageal cancer than those who smoke cigarettes.

Long-term preference for hot food may also be a factor in causing cancer. For example, among the Chinese residents of Singapore who speak the Fujian dialect, they have the habit of drinking hot beverages, and their incidence of esophageal cancer is much higher than that of the Cantonese dialect. The Kazakh people love to chew "Nasi", which is very irritating and contains tobacco leaves, which may be related to the high incidence of esophageal cancer. In Japan, people who like to eat hot porridge and hot tea also have a higher incidence rate.

Prolonged esophagitis caused by various reasons may be a precursor of esophageal cancer, especially when accompanied by the formation of anaplastic cells, which is more likely to cause cancer. Some scholars have reported that esophagitis and esophageal cancer are closely related, and esophagitis often occurs about 10 years earlier than esophageal cancer. Esophagitis is also prone to occur in the middle thoracic esophagus, and esophagitis and cancer are often present at the same time in autopsies.
