Study shows Parkinson's increases risk of melanoma

Research shows that Parkinson's disease increases the risk of melanoma. Xinhua News Agency, Los Angeles, June 6 (Reporter Gao Yuan) American researchers announced on the 6th that Parkinson's disease increases the risk of melanoma. Is this true? Let's see what the experts say below.

To understand the relationship between Parkinson's disease and melanoma, researchers from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences analyzed data from 12 related studies conducted between 1965 and 2010. The analysis showed that people with Parkinson's disease are more likely to develop melanoma than people without Parkinson's disease. Male Parkinson's disease patients are twice as likely to develop melanoma as other men, and female Parkinson's disease patients are 1.5 times more likely to develop melanoma than other women.

The researchers pointed out that since Parkinson's disease and melanoma are both relatively rare diseases, the chance of suffering from both diseases at the same time is lower, so people don't need to panic. The researchers suggested that Parkinson's patients should pay attention to protecting their skin.

The researchers said they could not explain exactly why Parkinson's disease and melanoma were linked, but they were certain it had nothing to do with the medications Parkinson's patients take.

Parkinson's disease is a common neurological disease in middle-aged and elderly people, with the main symptoms of tremor, slow movement, muscle stiffness, etc. Melanoma is a type of skin cancer caused by lesions in the pigment cells on the skin. Once the cancer cells spread, it is difficult to treat.

The research report was published in the American journal Neurology.
