Can teratoma be contagious?

Teratomas are divided into benign teratomas and malignant teratomas. The components and structures of benign tumors are relatively clear, including some skin and nerve tissues, while the components and structures of malignant tumors are not clear. In the early stage, the disease generally has no symptoms and is only discovered during physical examinations. So is teratoma contagious?

Teratomas are generally non-contagious and are divided into several types: intracranial teratoma, gastric teratoma, testicular teratoma, ovarian teratoma, and sacrococcygeal teratoma. Their manifestations are different and their treatment methods are also different.

Intracranial teratomas need to be examined and diagnosed through X-rays, CT scans, etc. Benign teratomas may be cured through surgical resection, but due to their special location, they may not be completely removed. Gastric teratomas are generally benign and have a good prognosis with surgical resection.

Testicular teratoma is mainly diagnosed through B-ultrasound, which is relatively effective in determining its size and location. This type of teratoma is mainly treated with surgery. In some cases, testicular-preserving surgery can be considered, and no other treatment is required after some surgeries.

For the treatment of ovarian teratoma, surgery is performed directly to maintain fertility for immature teratomas, and combined chemotherapy is used after surgery to avoid recurrence; for cases where there is no desire to have children and the tumor is more serious, hysterectomy is performed directly, followed by chemotherapy to prevent recurrence.

Note:

Generally speaking, the disease is not contagious and is usually treated surgically. The treatment of benign tumors is relatively simple, while for severe cases, chemotherapy is required after surgery.
