What is the reason why glioma is difficult to cure

Glioma is a brain tumor disease that is difficult to cure and prone to recurrence. It affects the patient's physical and mental health and even endangers human life. So what is the reason why glioma is difficult to cure? Is it because there are no symptoms in the early stages, so the best treatment time is missed? The following editor will introduce to you the reasons why glioma is difficult to cure.

Glioma is the most common type of intracranial tumor, accounting for about 40% of all brain tumors. Glioma is actually the common name for this type of tumor in our country. The WHO (World Health Organization) classification of nervous system tumors names it as neuroepithelial tumors, which are also divided into several subcategories, the most common of which are astrocytomas, oligodendrogliomas, glioblastomas, ependymomas, and glioblastomas.

In addition to classification, WHO also has a tumor grading system, which is divided into 4 levels, represented by Roman numerals Ⅰ-Ⅳ. The smaller the number, the lower the malignancy, and the larger the number, the higher the malignancy. Grades Ⅰ-Ⅱ are generally called low-grade gliomas, which are of low malignancy. Many years ago, they were considered benign, but are currently considered to be of low malignancy; Ⅲ-Ⅳ are called high-grade gliomas.

Since gliomas grow in an infiltrative manner, surgery can achieve complete resection as shown by imaging, but it still cannot completely eliminate tumor cells. Radiotherapy and chemotherapy can be used to consolidate the disease. If low-grade gliomas are treated properly, the 5-year survival rate is high, and in some cases it can reach decades; high-grade gliomas have poor treatment effects, and the average survival period of glioblastoma is only about 11 months. Of course, as the technology level improves, the survival period is constantly extending. In short, gliomas are a difficult and hot spot in neurosurgery treatment, and a formal treatment strategy is needed.
