What is the risk of recurrence after hemisection of thyroid cancer?

Hemithyroid cancer resection refers to a hemithyroid cancer surgery. The risk of recurrence after hemithyroid cancer resection is generally greater than 10%, but not all patients will experience recurrence, and not all thyroid cancer patients will experience recurrence after hemithyroid cancer resection. It is mainly related to factors such as the patient's physique, medical condition, and postoperative care.

1. Patient's physical condition: If the patient has a good physical condition and strong immunity, the recovery after surgery will be better and the risk of recurrence will be relatively low. However, if the patient has poor immunity and slow recovery, even if the thyroid cancer is hemisectioned, recurrence may occur;

2. Condition: Hemisection of thyroid cancer is a treatment method for all thyroid tumors. For patients with more serious conditions, such as tumors invading the trachea and esophagus, with lymph node metastasis, or those at high risk of postoperative recurrence, the risk of postoperative recurrence will be relatively high;

3. Postoperative care: After hemisection of thyroid cancer, if the patient has wound infection or has other underlying diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension, etc., recurrence may occur if postoperative care is not done properly. If the patient follows the doctor's advice for regular follow-up after surgery and has no obvious adverse symptoms, the risk of recurrence will be relatively low. However, if the patient does not pay attention to personal care after surgery, often stays up late, smokes, drinks, consumes spicy and irritating foods, etc., the risk of recurrence will be relatively high;

4. Other factors: Whether thyroid cancer recurs after hemisection is also related to factors such as a light diet after surgery, exposure to ionizing radiation, and postoperative suppressive treatment. Patients are advised to eat a light diet after surgery and avoid contact with harmful substances. At the same time, if patients use drugs such as levothyroxine sodium tablets for a long time after surgery, it may also cause low thyroid hormone levels, which can easily cause recurrence of the disease.
