How to peel yam without itching your hands

Most of the yams we eat in daily life are peeled, but the yam skin contains saponin and a lot of alkali. Some people have delicate skin and are sensitive to alkali. After contact with alkali, their hands will become itchy and painful. This is an allergic phenomenon. If you want to peel the yam, you can soak the yam skin in water first, or steam the yam with hot water to avoid this situation. Be sure to wash your hands immediately after peeling the yam.

The yam skin contains saponins or the mucus contains phytoalkalis, which may cause allergies and itching in some people. In severe cases, symptoms such as redness, swelling, and stinging may occur.

In fact, you don’t have to peel yam because it has high medicinal value and can prevent fat deposition in the cardiovascular system. It has always been used as a drug for preventing and treating atherosclerosis in traditional Chinese medicine. Therefore, the correct way to eat it is to eat it with the skin. However, if the skin is not peeled, the taste will be seriously affected, so most people are accustomed to peeling it before eating.

(1) Soak before peeling: Wash the yam with clean water, then soak it in boiling water for 5 minutes. Take it out and peel it without worrying about itchy hands.

(2) Steam before peeling: Wash the yam with clean water, then steam it in a steamer. Then take it out and peel it without itching your hands.

(3) Wear gloves before peeling: Wash the yam with clean water, then wear gloves or put a plastic bag on your hands so that your hands will not feel itchy when peeling the skin.

(4) Apply white vinegar before peeling: Before peeling, pour a little white vinegar on the palm of your hand and rub it, then peel, which can effectively prevent itching.

(5) Soak in vinegar: Pour an appropriate amount of vinegar into a basin, dilute it with water, and then soak your hands completely in the basin. After 10 minutes, your hands will no longer itch.

(6) Wash with soap: First wash your hands with soap, then rub some white wine on your hands, and then wash your hands with soap again to relieve itching.

(7) Roast your hands over fire: Wash your hands with clean water first, then roast them over fire. Turn your palms repeatedly while roasting to relieve itching.
