Is chemotherapy necessary after surgery for early breast cancer?

Early breast cancer refers to breast cancer patients with clinical stage I or II who are eligible for surgical treatment. Surgery is still the main treatment method. The surgical method can be modified radical mastectomy, radical mastectomy or breast-conserving surgery. If the lesion is medial or central, the internal mammary lymph nodes on the same side need to be treated if necessary. After surgery, whether adjuvant treatment is needed is determined based on the patient's age, lesion site, whether the internal mammary lymph nodes have metastases, and the status of hormone receptors.

For patients who have undergone surgery, if there are high-risk factors such as vascular invasion, lymph node metastasis or nerve invasion, adjuvant chemotherapy is often required. For patients with low tumor differentiation, adjuvant chemotherapy is generally also required. For patients with larger tumors, adjuvant chemotherapy is required in combination with the patient's molecular typing. Breast cancer patients without high-risk factors generally do not need chemotherapy. Early breast cancer surgery generally requires six to eight chemotherapy sessions.
