Is CT scan for esophageal cancer accurate?

Is CT scan for esophageal cancer accurate?

CT examination has a certain degree of accuracy in diagnosing esophageal cancer, but it may not be a complete diagnosis and further examinations such as endoscopy and biopsy are needed. CT can help determine the size and location of the tumor and whether distant metastasis has occurred, especially in staging and treatment planning.

1The role of CT examination

CT scan is a non-invasive imaging examination that can visually display the structure of the esophagus and surrounding tissues through X-ray scanning. For esophageal cancer, CT examination can determine the location and size of the tumor and whether it has invaded surrounding tissues and organs such as the aorta and trachea. It is also very important for detecting whether esophageal cancer has lymph node metastasis or distant metastasis such as lung or liver.

The sensitivity and specificity of CT examinations are good in disease diagnosis, but its limitation is that it may not be able to distinguish smaller early lesions. For example, lesions only in the mucosa may not be clearly visible on CT images, so other examination methods need to be combined to improve the comprehensiveness of diagnosis.

2Must be combined with other inspections

Although CT examination is useful, it cannot be used alone to definitively diagnose esophageal cancer. The following examinations are often used in combination:

Endoscopic examination: Gastroscopy can directly observe esophageal mucosal lesions and is the gold standard for a clear diagnosis, especially for patients suspected of early esophageal cancer.

Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS): It can evaluate the depth of tumor invasion and the condition of local lymph nodes in detail, which is very helpful for preoperative staging.

Pathological biopsy: Suspicious tissue is removed through endoscopy for pathological analysis, providing the most authoritative basis for diagnosing cancer.

3 Staging of esophageal cancer and the role of CT

CT is of great value in staging esophageal cancer:

Stage I: The tumor is confined to the mucosa or superficial muscle, and CT may be difficult to judge.

Stage II and III: When the tumor invades deeper tissues or local lymph node metastasis occurs, CT can more clearly show the extent of the lesion.

Stage IV: When there are distant metastases such as liver and lung metastases, CT is the preferred imaging tool to identify the metastatic area.

When using CT for examination, the ability to distinguish lesions can be improved through enhanced scanning. In combination with other examinations such as PET-CT and MRI, the accuracy of diagnosis can be further improved.

The value of CT examination in the diagnosis of esophageal cancer is mainly reflected in the assessment of tumor range, degree of invasion and metastasis, and is suitable for preoperative staging and design of treatment plans. Early screening still needs to rely on endoscopy and other examinations, and the diagnosis must be confirmed by pathological biopsy. If you suspect that you have symptoms of esophageal cancer, you should see a doctor as soon as possible and choose a combination of appropriate examination methods to obtain a more accurate diagnosis.
