What can't you eat if you have gout

What can't you eat if you have gout

Gout is a common chronic disease, belonging to metabolic disorders, generally manifested as arthritis. If gout symptoms are severe, it can also lead to kidney disease in patients, and even cause renal failure and endanger life. Therefore, we must not underestimate gout. Once it occurs, it should be treated in time, and strict dietary restrictions must be imposed. So, what can't gout eat?

Gout is a disease that is more common in middle-aged and elderly people. Some obese friends or those who do mental work are more likely to suffer from the disease. If you find symptoms of gout, you must actively seek treatment and pay attention to daily dietary taboos. The following experts will tell you what you should not eat if you have gout.

1. First of all, we must control purine

High-purine foods are the main source of exogenous uric acid in the body. Excessive intake is undoubtedly very detrimental to gout. Foods with high purine content include animal offal, brains, miscellaneous beans, and various broths and gravies; coarse grains, spinach, cauliflower, mushrooms, lentils, and poultry and livestock meat also contain purine between 75 and 150 mg per 100 grams, so they should be chosen with caution.

2. Take in an appropriate amount of vitamin C and B group

This helps dissolve the uric acid accumulated in the tissues; quit smoking and drinking, drink more water (the daily water intake should reach 2500-3000 ml), which helps the kidneys excrete uric acid by increasing urine volume and reduces the damage of uric acid to the kidneys;

3. Control your total daily calorie intake

Control the total calories in your daily diet and lose weight. 60% to 70% of gout patients are obese. Many data show that obesity is one of the risk factors for gout, and blood uric acid is positively correlated with body mass index. The diet of gout patients should be controlled at about 80% of the normal person's food intake. Overeating is strictly prohibited. Gout patients often have a sudden increase in blood uric acid levels after overeating, causing gouty arthritis attacks.

4. Eat more vegetables, fruits and other vegetarian foods

Most vegetables and fruits are alkaline foods, which can increase the body's alkaline reserves and increase the pH value of body fluids. When the pH value in the joint fluid rises above 6, uric acid is mostly in a free state and urate crystals rarely form. An increase in urine pH can prevent the formation of uric acid crystals and promote their dissolution, increase the excretion of uric acid, prevent the formation of stones, or dissolve existing stones. Many vegetables and fruits contain a small amount of potassium, which can promote the excretion of uric acid from the kidneys and reduce urinary salt deposition.

5. Don’t drink alcohol, drink plenty of water

Beer is a beverage rich in purine and is prohibited for gout patients. Drinking too much alcohol, on the one hand, will produce a large amount of lactic acid in the body, which prevents the excretion of uric acid. On the other hand, alcohol is a high-calorie item. Drinking a lot of it will produce excessive heat and increase uric acid production. Therefore, gout patients should be persuaded not to drink alcohol as much as possible. Drinking more water is to increase urine output, facilitate the excretion of uric acid, and prevent the formation and deposition of urate.

After reading the above experts’ introduction, we clearly know what people with gout should not eat. Experts also remind that gout patients must actively participate in treatment and cooperate with dietary control and conditioning to achieve the ideal treatment effect. Patients must not let their gout get worse because of their momentary greed, otherwise they will regret it.
