What are cervical polyps? What are the dangers?

Most people do not have obvious symptoms when they have cervical polyps, so it is not easy to detect and take it seriously. What are cervical polyps? Extra growths on the surface of cervical tissue are often called cervical polyps. It is a benign tumor, generally small. Larger cervical polyps are generally several centimeters, which may cause discomfort to patients, but under normal circumstances they are not so large. Most patients usually have polyps within one centimeter.

Chronic cervical inflammation usually leads to the formation of cervical polyps, because the long-term stimulation of chronic inflammation on the cervical mucosa causes the mucosa to continue to proliferate, slowly accumulating and forming a more protruding part. Let’s take a closer look at what cervical polyps are.

Cervical polyps are attached to the cervical opening or the cervical canal. They are formed by local hyperplasia of the cervical mucosa under the stimulation of inflammation, and protrusion out of the external cervical opening, accompanied by infiltration of inflammatory cells. They can be single or multiple, small in size, with a diameter of less than 1 cm, and look like a tongue or the size of a soybean. The small ones are like rice grains, bright red in color, soft and brittle in texture, easy to bleed, with a slender pedicle, which can lead to increased leucorrhea.

Another type of cervical polyp occurs in the cervical vaginal part, with a surface covered by stratified squamous epithelium and a stroma containing fibrous connective tissue. This type of polyp is superficial, protrudes to the surface, has a wide base, is light red in color, and has a tough texture.

When cervical polyps are small, there are no subjective symptoms or only mild symptoms, which manifest as yellow leucorrhea, most of which have an odor, or leucorrhea with blood. Larger polyps may show symptoms of bloody leucorrhea or contact bleeding, especially after sexual intercourse or straining during bowel movements, a small amount of bleeding may occur, and it may also manifest as postmenopausal vaginal bleeding. These symptoms are very similar to those of cervical cancer. Therefore, once the above symptoms appear, diagnosis and treatment should be carried out as soon as possible.

Most women who develop cervical polyps are middle-aged women. Now that you know what cervical polyps are, you should first prevent cervicitis when preventing them. Especially during menstruation, you must maintain good hygiene as it is very easy to be infected by bacteria. It is recommended to have a gynecological examination at least once a year. If any abnormality is found, early treatment can prevent the formation of polyps.
