10 Exaggerated Health Products

10 Exaggerated Health Products

Some daily product labels or TV commercials contain exaggerated claims, which not only mislead consumers and waste money but may also cause many health problems. The editor of Popular Health Network has listed 10 kinds of daily products with exaggerated effects.

1. Antibacterial soap

Data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that about 75% of soaps or hand sanitizers contain antibacterial ingredients, but there is no evidence that antibacterial products are better than ordinary soap. Dr. Milros recommends washing your hands with plain soap for at least 20 seconds.

2. Anti-inflammatory eye drops

Dr. Mark Milros, an emergency medicine specialist in New York, said that frequent use of anti-inflammatory eye drops can easily lead to dry eyes, allergies, and even induce eye diseases. He suggested going to the hospital to check the cause of the red eyes and prescribe the right medicine.

3. Mouthwash

Except for patients with oral diseases such as dry mouth, healthy people do not need to use deodorizing mouthwash. Experts recommend brushing and flossing your teeth twice a day to prevent bad breath. If bad breath persists for a long time, you should pay attention to gingivitis, tooth decay and even diabetes.

4. Toner

Patricia Farris, a professor of dermatology at Tulane University School of Medicine, said that most people can restore their skin's pH without using toner. She recommends using a mild cleanser or plain, unscented soap to remove oil from your skin.

5. Expensive Moisturizer

Dr. Rebecca Kazin, an expert at Johns Hopkins University, said there is no research to prove that the more expensive and high-end the moisturizer, the better it works. She suggests that a regular moisturizer containing retinol or antioxidants and an SPF of 30 or above can also be effective in anti-wrinkle skin care.

6. Vitamin Supplements

Dr. Milros said that healthy people do not need additional vitamin supplements, and random supplements are harmful rather than helpful. Experts recommend a balanced diet and eating more fruits and vegetables.

7. Vaginal douche

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) states that the vagina has a self-cleaning function and vaginal douching is not only unnecessary, but it can disrupt the acid-base balance of the vagina and make infection more likely. Experts recommend that if abnormal secretions or odor occur, a gynecological examination should be conducted promptly.

8. Scented feminine products

Like vaginal washes, scented sanitary pads, sprays and other feminine products have more disadvantages than advantages and can easily lead to private part infections. ACOG experts recommend choosing unscented feminine products and maintaining private hygiene by washing the vulva with neutral soap or warm water.

9. Cold prevention medicine

Dr. Milros said that research on the effect of vitamin C in preventing colds has not yet reached a qualitative conclusion. The Mayo Clinic has found that certain cold nasal sprays can cause a loss of smell. Experts suggest that frequent and thorough hand washing is the key to preventing colds.

10. Toothbrush disinfectant

The American Dental Association states that there are many types of bacteria in the human mouth, and new toothbrushes also contain bacteria. No research has proven that toothbrush disinfectants are good for health. Experts recommend that after using the toothbrush, rinse it with tap water and let it dry naturally with the head facing upwards.
