Do I need to be on an empty stomach for a gastroscopy?

With the improvement of living standards, people's work pressure is getting greater and greater, resulting in many office workers such as doctors, drivers, and sales staff who are busy and stressed at work and often cannot eat on time. Therefore, there are currently many people suffering from stomach problems. Stomach problems are not ordinary diseases. When you find stomach discomfort, you must go to the hospital for treatment in time to avoid missing the best treatment time and worsening the condition.

Gastroscopy is the best choice for people to treat stomach diseases. Although it is a bit painful, it is the clearest and most reliable treatment method for examining stomach diseases and the duodenum. However, you cannot eat eight hours before gastroscopy to avoid vomiting or affecting the effect.

Gastroscopy is currently the best method for diagnosing gastric and duodenal diseases, especially peptic ulcers and cancer. Although gastroscopy has the advantages of being safe, easy to operate, and highly applicable, its safety and correctness of the assessment require the patient's cooperation.

Try to relax and avoid excessive stress. Generally speaking, gastroscopy is a less painful examination method, and the doctor can directly see the condition of the organ being examined, which is more effective than X-ray barium meal examination. It can visually detect lesions and preliminarily determine the nature of the lesions. If necessary, it can also take small specimens from the lesion site for pathological examination and observe the condition of the diseased cells under a microscope.

If a barium meal examination has been done, gastroscopy must be performed 3 days later because the barium may adhere to the gastrointestinal mucosa, especially the site of ulcer lesions, making endoscopic diagnosis difficult.

During the examination, breathe in through the nose and exhale through the mouth; if saliva flows out, do not swallow it to avoid choking. After entering the mirror, the body and head cannot be turned to avoid damaging the mirror and injuring internal organs. There will definitely be some discomfort, such as nausea, bloating, and abdominal cramps, which should be endured appropriately. If the pain is really unbearable, you can use gestures to signal the operator (doctor or nurse) so that necessary measures can be taken.

Therefore, when doing gastroscopy, you cannot eat after 10 pm. You should go to the hospital for a gastroscopy on an empty stomach. After the test results come out, the doctor will give a specific treatment plan. Diet is also very important for people with stomach problems. You should eat stomach-nourishing foods and pay attention to a balanced diet.
