Recently, I have found many patients in the outpatient clinic who suddenly developed back pain due to washing in the early morning. Therefore, the elderly are reminded to pay attention.

After a night of sleep, the human body's soft tissues such as muscles, ligaments, and joint capsules will become relatively "stiff". At this time, if elderly friends wash their faces and brush their teeth immediately, it may cause greater pressure on the lumbar spine. To avoid risks, you need to pay attention to three aspects:

First, move your waist

For example, walk slowly around the room twice, swing your arms slowly as you walk, then stretch your waist, and then turn your waist a few times. Then use both hands to beat the back, rub the waist, and gently pat the lower limbs. The purpose of doing this is, firstly, to allow the body to adapt to the change from lying flat to upright position, to help blood circulation and limb tension throughout the body, and to adapt to matters such as washing. Secondly, it can enhance the flexibility of the waist and promote the circulation of qi and blood in the meridians around the waist.

Second, pay attention to your posture when washing your face and brushing your teeth.

The correct posture should be to squat with your knees slightly bent, and then bend forward. This can reduce the pressure on the lumbar intervertebral disc to a great extent and reduce the load on the lumbar spine. If you feel back pain while washing, you should immediately straighten your back, stretch your legs and rest for a while.

Third, the wash basin should not be too low

For the elderly who are accustomed to washing with a washbasin, the washbasin should not be placed too low to avoid increasing the load on the waist due to excessive forward bending of the lumbar spine.
