What are the diagnosis and treatment methods for irritable bowel syndrome

Many people in today’s society do not pay attention to their eating habits, which can lead to many diseases, irritable bowel syndrome being one of them. Many young working people go to the hospital for medical treatment, mostly due to physiological problems caused by irregular eating habits. Diarrhea and constipation are symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. To draw everyone's attention, the diagnosis and treatment methods of irritable bowel syndrome are introduced here.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a group of intestinal functional disorders with persistent or intermittent attacks, characterized by abdominal pain, bloating, changes in bowel habits and/or stool characteristics, but lack of gastrointestinal structural and biochemical abnormalities. Typical symptoms are abdominal pain and bloating associated with abnormal bowel movements. According to the main symptoms, the disease is divided into: diarrhea-predominant type; constipation-predominant type; alternating diarrhea and constipation type. Mental, dietary, cold and other factors may induce recurrence or aggravation of symptoms.

diagnosis

The diagnostic criteria for IBS are based on symptomology. The diagnosis is based on the exclusion of organic diseases. The currently internationally recognized IBS Rome III diagnostic criteria are recommended:

Recurrent episodes of abdominal pain or discomfort (discomfort means feeling uncomfortable rather than painful), with symptoms occurring on at least 3 days per month in the last 3 months, combined with 2 or more of the following: ① Symptoms are relieved after bowel movements; ② Episodes are accompanied by changes in bowel movement frequency; ③ Episodes are accompanied by changes in the consistency (appearance) of the stool.

Symptoms occurred for at least 6 months before diagnosis, and the above criteria were met in the past 3 months.

treat

Treatment principles: IBS has a complex etiology, multiple symptoms and is prone to recurrence. It cannot be treated with specific medications alone and requires comprehensive systemic treatment based on different individuals.

1. Adjust your lifestyle and diet to avoid inducing factors, choose a diet that is easily digestible and low in fat, and avoid irritating and sensitive foods. For those who suffer from constipation and bloating, they can eat more foods that are rich in fiber but not easy to produce gas, and avoid overeating and snacking. Patients with diarrhea as the main symptom should eat less foods containing crude fiber.

2. Psychotherapy Mental state is closely related to intestinal symptoms. Medical workers should explain the nature of the disease and precautions to patients with a sympathetic and responsible attitude, and should relieve patients of many of their doubts, eliminate their fears, and increase their confidence in overcoming the disease. Sedative and antidepressant treatment should be used when necessary. You can use desipramine 50 mg, 3 times/day, or fluoxetine hydrochloride (Prozac) 20 mg/day, or flupentixol/dimethylamine propylene (Dianesin), 2 tablets orally every morning to relieve mental abnormalities and relieve abdominal pain and other discomforts. You can also choose amitriptyline 25 mg, twice a day, doxepin 25 mg, 2 to 3 times a day, and those with poor sleep can take diazepam (Valium), etc.

3. Although drug treatment can alleviate symptoms, it cannot prevent recurrence. Therefore, drugs should be used rationally and drug abuse should be avoided.

The above knowledge is all about irritable bowel syndrome. After reading it, you will know how to treat your gastrointestinal problems. Diarrhea, constipation and other problems can be treated by yourself. Of course, the premise is to pay attention to your own living habits. Finally, I wish you all good health and a happy life.
