How to store hazelnuts

How to store hazelnuts

Autumn is the season for hazelnut harvest. Hazelnut is a common nut in life. There are many ways to eat hazelnut in daily life, and hazelnut is also very nutritious. Many people like to eat hazelnut, but most people eat hazelnuts directly fried, but some people like to eat hazelnuts directly raw. Although hazelnuts are rich in nutrition, fresh hazelnuts are particularly difficult to preserve. How to preserve fresh hazelnuts?

How to store fresh hazelnuts?

Keep sealed.

The safest way to store dried fruits is to place them in a sealed container. Glass bottles are better than plastic bottles. Glass is stable and will not volatilize harmful substances. The glass bottle must be dry and clean before putting dried fruits in it.

In addition, hazelnuts are easily affected by moisture, which is a key problem in storing hazelnuts. Dried tea leaves have a good water-absorbing and moisture-proof effect. Therefore, it is recommended to put a small amount of tea leaves in the uneaten hazelnuts at home to prevent moisture absorption. However, tea leaves have the fragrance of tea, and it is not advisable to put too much to affect the fragrance of the hazelnuts.

Can hazelnuts be frozen?

It is best not to. After processing, the nuts only need to be sealed and stored in a cool and ventilated place. However, if the nuts have not been processed, they can be frozen to prevent deterioration.

When processed and roasted nuts begin to come into contact with air, they will easily deteriorate and affect their flavor. If they are placed in the refrigerator, they will also become deliquescent due to the adsorption of water vapor. If you cannot finish eating them in a short period of time, it is recommended to store them in a sealed container in a cool place at room temperature; if you buy a large amount of unprocessed nuts, you can store them in the refrigerator to prevent them from spoiling.

Hazelnuts have an extremely low moisture content, only 3.5% to 7%, and are relatively durable in storage. However, hazelnuts are sensitive to temperature and humidity. During storage, if the temperature exceeds 20℃ or is exposed to light for a long time, the fat conversion will be accelerated and a "rancid smell" will be produced, making the nuts inedible; if the humidity is too high (relative humidity of the air is over 75%), the nuts will become moldy. Therefore, the storage conditions for hazelnuts are low temperature, low oxygen, dryness and avoid light. Suitable conditions are temperatures below 15°C, relative humidity below 60%, and dim light in the warehouse. Nuts can be stored for 2 years without deterioration.

How to choose hazelnuts

1. When selecting hazelnuts, the first thing you should do is observe. The ones with plump kernels, large and round shapes, thin and white shells, and dry are better, while the shriveled ones are inferior. The best color for benevolent clothes is yellowish-white, followed by dark yellow; brownish-yellow is even worse, and the "tiger-skin walnut" with dark brown stripes should basically not be considered.

2. Hazelnuts have thick skin and are small in size. They are not easy to crack open and need tools to crack them open. The kernel yield is 60-75%. Hazelnut kernels are small and hairy (that is, they have woody fuzz, are difficult to digest and have a bad taste). Most of them are half kernels, and the kernels are only slightly fragrant and are not worth buying.

3. If the hazelnut skin is very thin and the size is large, it will open easily with a tap of the hand, and the kernel yield is 95-99%. The hazelnut kernel is large and full, the kernel is smooth and shiny, without any woody fluff, and the kernel is fragrant and crispy. This is a high-quality product.

4. If the hazelnut skin is thin and the size is large, it is easy to crack it open. The kernel is smooth and shiny without woody fluff, and the kernel yield is 90-95%. This kind of hazelnut kernel is large and fragrant, and is worth buying.

5. If the hazelnut skin is very thin, and each hazelnut has cracks, and is large in size, you can break it open along the cracks with your hands. The kernel yield is 95-99%. The hazelnut kernels are large and full, the kernels are smooth and shiny, without woody fluff, and the kernels are fragrant and crispy. This is a top-quality product.
