Scoliosis refers to a spinal deformity in which one or more segments of the spine bend laterally away from the midline of the body in the coronal plane, forming a curved spinal deformity. The symptoms of scoliosis include tilted shoulders and pelvis, long-term asymmetrical posture, especially unequal lengths of hands and lower limbs, tight muscle tissue on the convex side, and weak and stretched muscle tissue on the concave side.

The harm of scoliosis to the body

Severe scoliosis is very harmful to the human body. Since the torso of patients with severe scoliosis is often in an unbalanced state, with a tilted trunk, unequal shoulders, collapsed chest, and razor back deformity, the patient's appearance is seriously affected.

Not only that, the biggest impact of scoliosis on human health is the damage to lung function.

When the Cobb's angle is greater than 40°, although most patients have no clinical manifestations of pulmonary dysfunction, pulmonary function tests have shown a decrease in lung reserve function. Severe scoliosis can also be combined with lordosis or kyphosis, causing significant deformation of the chest, compression and displacement of lung tissue, distortion of small airways and capillary beds in the lungs, and decreased lung compliance and increased respiratory and circulatory resistance. As a result, further development leads to lung-blood gas exchange dysfunction.

It may even lead to serious consequences such as pulmonary hypertension and cor pulmonale, which will seriously affect the heart and lung functions. Therefore, these patients should undergo surgery as soon as possible when there are surgical indications to prevent further development of the deformity and improve the damaged cardiopulmonary function.
